The Rodent Hour

The Rodent Hour The Rodent Hour formerly broadcast music by independent artists from Brooklyn & beyond to the world.

The name of the show is an homage to the friends that I made during my misspent youth, those lifelong friends who joined me on those weekend nights so many years ago and whose eclectic tastes still influence the selection of artists and music that I feature on the show. I like to think that my love of music is bred in bone from the nights spent watching the emergence of the Canadian independent mu

sic scene in the northern city of Edmonton, Alberta. Many nights were spent in the middle of a thundering local music scene supporting local independent bands like SNFU, Troc ’59, Route 66, Jerry Jerry and the Sons of Rhythm Orchestra and The Thieves, while the university radio station – CJSR – brought in emerging acts still on the bus to the big time: The Shakin’ Pyramids, D.O.A., NoMeansNo, The Blasters, X, The Hoodoo Gurus, Teenage Head, Rank and File to name just a few. More than ten years after the launch of The Rodent Hour on Pratt Radio I’m still inspired by the amazing music being created by independent musicians that play with the ferocity and intensity that I grew up listening to.

I don’t know about anyone else but tomorrow is presenting me with quite the dilemma.

Labor unions, democratic organizations and community groups are organizing an economic blackout this year to commemorate May Day, International Workers Day.

May Day Strong events are being planned across the US, with organizers calling for “no school, no work, no shopping”, in protest of government policies they say put billionaires’ needs above those of workers.

Friday, May 1st is also Bandcamp Friday, I’m sure that you’ve heard about it.

I want to support the no shopping aspect of May Day Strong but I also want to support the independent artists who have brought me so much joy over the years.

I think the best thing I can do is to buy some music on Bandcamp Friday because if there’s going to be a group of people who will help lead us out of this mess we’re in, it’s going to be the artists and musicians.

Well, this interview with Damian from GIFTSHOP certainly went deeper than any visit we did with them on Pratt Radio, BBOX Radio or Radio Free Brooklyn.

Our only saving grace is that our chili was way better and the whisky was smooth. Enjoy!

Damian Eckstein is a veteran (or perhaps a stalwart) of the New York City music scene whose career began with trial by fire performances at the legendary CBGB while he was still in high school. His creative philosophy was forged through a mix of raw DIY hardcore influences and formal studies in stud

Random photo of the former location of Hanks Saloon on Atlantic Avenue @ 3rd Avenue in Brooklyn.

Brooklyn's favorite dive bar closed more than seven years ago. It was a one of a kind place but, like so many of our favorite old school places, it was consumed by the insatiable appetite of gentrification.

The construction fence is the first sign I've seen that some form of development might finally be happening at the old space. To think that it could have still been operating while the developers decided just what the heck they were going to do. 😡

It's Bandcamp Friday!

Even though we're no longer on the air, that doesn't mean we've stopped supporting local, independent artists.

It's the end of an era!

After 20 years in Clinton Hill, the good people at Taqueria Tepango have decided to close up shop.

Before we started serving chili, Lorenzo used to whip up some amazing tacos and burritos for our guests. Heck! There were a few times when he would deliver them himself!

Tepango was also our go to spot in the neighborhood for Mexican food. Even after we'd wrapped up our run at Pratt Institute, Lorenzo would still ask about how things were going with the radio show. He was one class act!

All is not lost though! Lorenzo will continue making magic at La Mesita Restaurant, located at 1513 Myrtle Ave.

This is a seriously great lineup and I hope people will get out to the show. (If only shows were a thing that we still did.)

Thanks Tom Howard!

Two weeks ago I received this fantastic show poster from one of the OG Rodents, who this show was named after. Not sure who the Crotch Rockets were but NoMeansNo and D.O.A. were hugely influential in my mis-spent youth.
