For over 50 years, Filomena Magavero dedicated herself to the Fort Schuyler cadets. Now, at the age of 104, she has joined Heritage Hall. RADM John A. Okon ’91 and CAPT Chris Zola ’92 personally presented her citation.

During his Homecoming speech, CAPT Zola shared that Ms. Magavero was the librarian who tirelessly searched for answers even after the cadets had left. Her kindness made the library a welcoming place for all at Fort Schuyler.

Her willingness to go the extra mile embodies the very essence of what makes Fort Schuyler THE MARITIME COLLEGE so special. Like many, Mrs. Magavero understood that education extends beyond the classroom. Through her care, encouragement, and unwavering dedication, she played a pivotal role in shaping the experiences of countless young men and women who passed through the College.

As an institution dedicated to the advancement of our students and maritime education, we are incredibly proud to call Ms Filomena Magavero one of our own.

The Maritime Industry Museum at Fort Schuyler hosted the Shipbuilding in America conference, bringing together industry leaders from across the country to talk innovation, workforce development, financing, the Jones Act and the future of American shipbuilding and ship repair.

Thank you to the speakers, panelists, attendees and sponsors for making it such a thought-provoking day, including remarks from Laila Linares of the Department of Transportation and Anthony Fisher of MARAD.

🏆Big news from Fort Schuyler!🏆

Maritime College has won the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 for 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲, and we also received the 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱, the highest recognition, chosen as the “best of the best” from all 2026 entries. ⚓

Maritime College Family,

I am pleased to share an important update on Empire State VII. The federal activation plan has changed, and the ship is now expected to return to Fort Schuyler for academic use, ship work, and with watches resuming no later than the middle of November.

This is welcome news for our Cadets, faculty, staff, and the entire Maritime College Family. Empire State is more than a training ship. It is a classroom, a laboratory, and an essential part of the Maritime experience. Having the ship back at Fort Schuyler will allow us to resume the critical hands-on learning, shipboard activities, and sea time requirements for our USCG-approved program.

We will continue working with MARAD to confirm the exact details of the ship’s return and ensure we are ready to resume normal operations. I will communicate updates as additional information becomes available.

It was a privilege to welcome SUNY - The State University of New York Chancellor John B. King Jr. and the SUNY Board of Trustees, including Chairman Merryl H. Tisch and Trustee Marcos A. Crespo, during their recent visit to Fort Schuyler. They engaged with our cadets, discovering what sets Maritime College apart as the premier institution for maritime education.

During this engagement, they joined a small group of Pay It Forward Fund (PIFF) and Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) cadets for lunch, where cadets shared their personal experiences and highlighted the impact of PIFF’s interest-free loans in support of their Summer Sea Term training expenses. Dozens of families joined us for our annual STEAM Day, including our local friends who look forward to this event every year. Participants learned about water quality testing aboard the Sea Lab 41, tried their hand at coding and chemistry, and explored so much more. 🧪💻🔬

A huge thank you to the Maritime College faculty, staff, and student volunteers who made the day possible!
