NYU Steinhardt’s Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions was established in 1925, and has developed into a major research and practice center in music technology, music business, music composition, film scoring, music performance practices, performing arts therapies, and the performing arts-in-education. Our degree programs—baccalaureate through doctorate—share the Steinhardt School’s spirit of openness and innovation that encourages the pursuit of high artistic and academic goals.

When unexpected traffic delays left The New York Pops short two percussionists during a season-opening rehearsal, four NYU Steinhardt Percussion Studies students stepped in without hesitation.

Grace Sprecher, Katie Leonard, Brynna Gritter Kenneke, and Anastasia Theodoropoulos sight-read five pieces from The Music of James Bond, earning applause from the orchestra and conductor Steven Reineke.

NYU Steinhardt’s Music Business program combines coursework in business and musical arts with direct access to industry leaders, in the heart of New York City. Choose from a BS, BM, or MA, and tailor your studies in areas such as entrepreneurship, strategic marketing, A&R, and data analytics. Students also gain real-world experience through internships and the new Sony Audio Institute.
No music background required for the BS.

That they are only as limited as they limit themselves. That they are capable of far more than they may realize when they truly put their minds to their goals.

*If you weren’t a singer or teacher, what career would you have chosen?
Professional golfer and entrepreneur.

*What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
??? not sure haha. I guess I’m not that adventurous. No paragliding for me.

Gardenia scent

Hearing that I helped a student believe they belonged in the room.

* One piece of advice you hope every student remembers long after graduation?
Explore every one of your passions. You never know how they’ll connect.

* One song you could listen to over and over?
‘Cut to the Feeling’ by Carly Rae Jepsen. It makes me feel like anything is possible,
especially on a run.

Scuba diving with hammerhead sharks.

Jared Shaw (BM `20) Percussion Studies
Since graduating, Jared has held the drum and percussion chair on national tours such as Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and The Book of Mormon. He has also subbed on Broadway productions, including the dynamic drum set book for Tommy. His performances span a range of genres, including big-band jazz, indie rock, and funk. Jared has played at notable venues like The Kennedy Center, Fox Theater, 54 Below, and the National Theater in Ghana. His experience also includes working in Off-Broadway productions and various studio projects.

On April 15, the Sony Audio Institute hosted In Conversation With… Fab Dupont, welcoming Grammy Award-winning producer and mix engineer Fab Dupont for an evening of open dialogue with students.

Known for his work with artists like Bad Bunny, Shakira, ASAP Rocky, Lorde and Jennifer Lopez, Fab shared insight into his creative process, career journey, and the realities of working across today’s music industry.

Through thoughtful conversation and direct engagement, students gained a deeper understanding of the craft and collaboration behind the records they love.
