FAREWELL YORK COLLEGE

Dear York College Alumni and Friends:

I am sharing my last YCAN Facebook post with you as I am leaving York College.

Many of you have read about the resignation of President Marcia V. Keizs and many changes taking place at the College.

I regret to inform you that, due to the leadership of the Office of Institutional Advancement, I am one of the casualties of those changes.

I hope that from the creation of this page, on June 25, 2010, you have enjoyed the many years of reading the postings of student success, faculty recognition, and wonderful York programs.

From the launch of the Masters of Social Work program to the many students entering phenomenal graduate programs throughout the country, York fulfills its mission as it enriches lives and enables students to grow as passionate, engaged learners with the confidence to realize their intellectual and human potential as individuals and global citizens.

I end by saying that it has truly been a pleasure to serve the students, faculty and alumni of York College!

Let me close with the York alma mater!

Hail York College! Proudly we see
York as the star of The City University
so here we stand to pledge by your name
to bring our college glory, honor, and fame.

York alumni and friends, please continue to bring York College Glory, Honor and Fame!

YORK COLLEGE CLASS REUNION 2019

May 31st, 2019 was a special day at York College. It was the day that York held its 49th Commencement Exercises and graduated its largest class along with the reunion celebration for alumni from the classes 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004 and 2009.

York alumni began their day marching in the Commencement processional with their reunion banners and then attended a luncheon in their honor in the Milton Bassin Performing Arts Center. A jazz combo, featuring York alumni, performed during the lunch.

Retired faculty members Howard Ruttenberg, Gloria Waldman, Laura Fishman, Robert Parmet and Helen Strassberg attended the reunion. Dr. Joseph Malkevitch, professor emeritus of the Mathematics department, was the keynote faculty speaker.

REMARKABLE MEDGER EVERS GRAD TO PURSUE MSW AT YORK

A young woman born with many health issues has defied expectations and plans to help others do the same with her new degree in social work.

When Nekhidia Harris was born, doctors gave her three days to live, but she defied the odds and graduated with honors Wednesday from Medgar Evers College.

"I was like, ‘Oh my gosh. Is this really, really happening? Oh my gosh.’ I thank God every day,” she said. “I feel so excellent. After the hard work and sleepless nights sometimes, all-nighters, it feels really good that I accomplished my bachelor’s in social work.”

The 24-year-old was born with many health issues, including brittle bones. She’s had numerous surgeries and dozens of fractures, but her family says nothing can break her spirit.

While Nekhidia Harris is about the size of a toddler, she already runs a nonprofit that she uses to motivate others with disabilities.

"I like to help people and especially children that don't have a voice. I love children – they gravitate to me – so I want to help them in every way I can,” she said.

In the fall, Nekhidia Harris plans to start a master’s program in social work at York College

York congratulates Nekhidia on her graduation from Medgar Evers and welcomes her into the MSW program!

YORK COLLEGE HAS FIRST-EVER WIN AT NASA ROBOTICS COMPETITION

The York College Astrobotics Program won their first-ever trophy for the "smallest and most efficient bot" at the Robotic Mining Challenge held May 6-10.

The competition was held at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and twenty-eight teams from around the country participated. Program Director Daniel Phelps launched the Astrobotics program at York College five years ago with students from computer science, information systems technology, and the communications technology department to create a team going up against the largest engineering schools across the country.

For the first time this year, all 12 students on York's team were able to travel to Alabama for the competition with support from AT&T.

“AT&T is committed to connecting students to enriching tech experiences that prepare them for careers in the industry,” said Elizabeth Segal, executive director, NYC External Affairs, AT&T and Member of the York College Foundation Board of Trustees. “We’re so proud to have supported the York College Astrobotics Program’s first-ever prize-winning trip to the NASA Robotic Mining Competition, and can’t wait to see what these talented young people do next.”
