PRESS RELEASE :Does The Criminal Justice System Discriminate Against People Of Color And The Working Class?

An Open Panel Discussion Presented By
The Hostos Criminal Justice Club, the Black Male Initiative,
And the Behavioral and Social Science Unit
Invite the Hostos Campus to An Open Panel Discussion:

Thursday, April 12, 2012 (Bronx, NY) – On Wednesday, April 18th the Hostos Criminal Justice Club, the Black Male Initiative, and the Behavioral and Social Science unit of Hostos Community College will host a panel discussion titled, Does The Criminal Justice System Discriminate Against People Of Color And The Working Class? The discussion will be moderated by Assistant Professor Howard Jordan, who will speak with distinguished guest panelists Calvin Smiley, Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Hostos Professor Hector Soto.
The panel discussion will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the C-Building room C-39.

Assistant Professor Howard Jordan says, “The criminal justice system is a barometer of the condition of our democracy. Our panel of experts will seek to examine ‘stop and frisk’ policies, mass prison incarceration of Black and/or Latinos, and violence in today's schools towards understanding the race and class biases of the structure. Maybe through a cross-fertilization of ideas between students and faculty we can help our communities put the word justice back in the criminal justice system,” Jordan added, “We are thrilled to be partnering up once again with the Behavioral and Social Science Department, and The Black Male Initiative at our college and with John Jay College of Criminal Justice with the goal of informing our college community how pivotal it is for us to rise as one. It’s time for us to take a stand and discuss this reality we read and hear about in the news.”

Calvin Smiley, Criminology Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said, “I'm thrilled to be partnering with Hostos for this initiative. A criminal justice system and more specifically a prison system speaks a lot about the culture of that society.”

Harry Copson, President of the Hostos Criminal Justice Club, and Avery Toledo, Vice President of the Hostos Criminal Justice Club, worked arduously to bring the panel discussion to the Hostos campus.
