At SUNY Maritime, as at most colleges, entering students must identify the program they wish to pursue. However, Maritime students, may have additional options to consider, such as on whether to pursue a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner’s License or not, and whether to be in the Regiment of Cadets or be a civilian. Here are some guidelines to help clarify the decision making process. Regiment: All students pursuing a USCG Merchant Mariner’s License – deck or engine – must be a member of the Regiment of Cadets. All other students, however, have the option of joining the Regiment. Please note that there is no military or any other type of service obligation incurred through the pursuit of a USCG License or from being a member of the Regiment of Cadets. USCG License: In some degree programs, passing the USCG Merchant Mariner’s License examination is a requirement of the degree, and completing all degree requirements is necessary to receive the license. In other words, the degree and license are linked; a student receives both degree and license or neither. Civilian Students (those not in the Regiment of Cadets): There are several SUNY Maritime College programs that do not lead to a USCG license; anyone enrolled in these programs may choose to attend the College as a civilian student. These curricula all involve internships rather than three required summer semesters at sea, although several engineering programs require a semester at sea plus two internships. Keep in mind, ANY student, regardless of major, may apply to be part of the Regiment and take advantage of the leadership training and opportunities this provides.

School counselors from Western and Central New York visited Maritime College as part of the SUNY - The State University of New York Fly-In Counselor Tour, gaining firsthand insight to best support their students through the college search process.

During their visit, counselors toured the EMPIRE STATE and met with President RADM Okon, learning about Maritime’s unique academic programs, hands-on training, and career pathways that prepare students for successful futures in the maritime industry and beyond. We’re excited for them to bring what they learned back to their students as they plan for college!

⚓𝐌𝐚𝐣𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲⚓

Meet Cadet 2/C Julian David.
Julian is committed to personal development and self-discipline in all areas, mentally, emotionally, and academically. Transitioning from a home-school environment to a hands-on curriculum, Julian understood that his college experience needed to include a curriculum that challenged him like never before.

"When I arrived at Maritime, I thought I had a grasp on engineering. But I quickly discovered that my learning curve was just beginning. Diving into new skills, especially in electronics, opened up an entirely new world for me. During Summer Sea Term, I learned how to solder, which really boosted my confidence and helped me see what this journey is truly about. Everything I absorbed in the classroom came to life, showing me how much more there is to explore in this field."

𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟:
"Embrace a more intersectional approach and take the time to discover your strengths. Avoid rushing into decisions. Stay connected to your passions and stay committed to who you are - everything will align in the right way."

We were proud to partner with the New York State Association for College Admission Counseling for the Spring NYSACAC College Fair, welcoming hundreds of students from across the state to the Peninsula of Opportunity.

Events like this are critical to strengthening the maritime pipeline. By creating accessible pathways to higher education, we help ensure the next generation of mariners, engineers, logisticians, and industry leaders can see a place for themselves in this essential global workforce.

The future of maritime begins with access, and we are committed to keeping that horizon open. ⚓

⚓𝐌𝐚𝐣𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲⚓
Meet Cadet 1/C Ethan Narofsky.
Ethan has loved the water since childhood and found marine life interesting. Growing up, he knew he wanted to be an engineer, and Marine Engineering was the perfect combination of both worlds.

"I opened up new doors throughout my Maritime journey. I was a Welding Rate during my First Class cruise, where I was given a project for the forward-most mast on the TSESVII that pushed my skills and tested my abilities. I worked really hard, and it was a great feeling to see that something I created not only performed well, but that others saw that potential in me."

𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟:
“Commit to it. Do your best and prepare for the life ahead. There's so much to learn, and if you put your mind to it, you will achieve it.”

𝙁𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙋𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙚𝙧 𝙎𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩⚓

Jack Cody, a sophomore at North Quincy High School in Quincy, is already charting an impressive course. An avid sailor, he competes on his school's sailing team, plays trumpet in the marching band, and is a key player on the soccer team.

On the water, Jack races 420s and participates in the winter frostbite series with his Laser across Rhode Island. With aspirations to study Marine Engineering and build a career in the marine industry, we’re excited to see where his journey takes him.

Jack, we look forward to seeing you in Fall 2028!
