Express Newark Announces its 2025 Annual Theme and Exhibition Program, RITUAL

Express Newark’s 2024-2025 annual theme Ritual is a series of exhibitions and events that explore the relationship between Islamic spiritual practices, rituals, and art—featuring experimentations in photography, film, sound art, and textiles. Ritual features work by artists, curators, students, and community members who’ve immersed themselves in nonsecular expressions of spirituality and Islamic traditions across the Muslim world. These works span Newark, which has long been home to one of our nation’s largest African American Muslim communities, while also branching out beyond the domestic borders of the United States to unite members of the global community.

By bridging traditional spiritual practices and aesthetic innovations, these artistic explorations turn towards Muslim interiorities—an often underrepresented perspective in art—to create timely meditations that center art and ritual and inspire new discourses, worldviews, and conversations about belief and identity.

On Tuesday, 10th December, we hosted the World Monuments Fund, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and members of Network of Engaged International Donors (NEID)

The event was about recontextualizing The MET’s Arts of Africa Galleries by telling the stories of African heritage places. The initiative aimed to foreground the richness and diversity of cultural landmarks across the African continent and highlight the critical work to preserve these unique sites.

The panel discussion which was moderated by World Monuments Fund Vice President of Programs, Jonathan S. Bell, featured Alisa Lagamma (Ceil and Michael E. Pulitzer Curator in Charge of The Met’s Michael C. Rockefeller Wing), Sosena Solomon (visual artist), and Tawanda Mukwende (Lecturer of Archaeology at Great Zimbabwe University). The welcome remarks were by Prof. Yaw Nyarko (Director of NYU Africa House-Center for Technology and Economic Development).

We look forward to continuous collaboration.

On September 26, 2024, NYU Africa House and Prof. Yaw Nyarko collaborated with the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) on the conference "Africa AI Blueprint: Building a Sustainable and Inclusive AI Ecosystem." It featured keynote speeches, presentations, and panel discussions with members of the academia, private sector, civil society, and multilateral organizations.

Some key highlights from the speakers were:

1. Research and development communities should be empowered to ensure the democratization of access to AI.

2. Multi-stakeholder approaches should be leveraged to develop and deploy holistic solutions for the continent that are safe, accessible, and relevant to the region.

3. Explore innovative methods of financing to ensure digital infrastructure development.

4. Academic researchers should be funded to pilot projects and programs that can be scaled broadly across regions.

5. Education and development of young people who can contribute to addressing the challenges in the space such as cybersecurity and lack of diversity.

6. Africa and Africans should be present at the table to ensure inclusive and legitimate decision-making.

Thank you to our partner, the AUDA-NEPAD, and to all our speakers and participants for insightful conversations.

How do immigration policies from economically advantaged countries affect people in less advantaged countries and the immigrants who come in with these policies?

Structured Luck takes us on a transnational journey to explore the societal, personal, and political implications of the US Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, a US immigration policy that is an annual economic and cultural event in many economically disadvantaged countries. It illuminates the trauma, resilience, determination, and mobility of immigrants who come to the U.S. through the DV program and closes with a call for the U.S. and other economically advantaged countries to develop policies that will better integrate their immigrants into society.
