CU Liberty in North Korea (LiNK) Columbia University's chapter of Liberty in North Korea. Providing relief to & raising awareness ab

CU LiNK is Columbia University's chapter of Liberty in North Korea, the only grassroots organization in the US devoted to the human rights crisis in North Korea. CU LiNK aims to spread awareness on the current humanitarian crisis in North Korea through documentary screenings, fundraising events, and speaker panels with prominent scholars and activists. We also help fundraise for LiNK's refugee res

cue missions, which rescue North Korean refugees living in China to help them finally find freedom in South Korea or the West. North Korean refugees in China often become victims of human trafficking and poverty, and risk forced deportation by Chinese authorities back to North Korea, where defection is punishable by public ex*****on or political imprisonment. LiNK helps refugees escape China and resettle abroad through a modern-day underground railroad network. Since 2004, Columbia students have participated in protests at the South Korean UN Mission in NYC, held teach-in's with high level North Korean defectors, held screenings of documentaries highlighting the refugee crisis, presented lectures with former political and labor camp prisoners, and organized numerous fundraisers on the Columbia University campus.

Featuring our inaugural weekly serenade is LISA KIM, our president for two years in a row. Lisa is a Barnard College senior majoring in Neuroscience & Behavior. She's dedicated all four years of college to LiNK and is passionate about bringing safety and justice to North Korean refugees. Lisa is sad to hand over the reins of leadership but her influence and legacy will continue to inspire future generations of LiNKers to come!

Random fact about Lisa: Lisa plans to travel during her gap year before med school -- East and South East Asia so hit her up with recs!!

Lisa is also a gifted pianist. Her favorite piece to play is Chopin's Fantasie Impromptu. Her love of music also carries over to karaoke -- you can find her exploring the life of Jasmine singing a Whole New World in k-town (every Friday)!

Check out the article "North Korean Refugees: Resettlement in Japan" featured in our latest newsletter!

"How does resettlement of North Korean refugees work in a country like Japan? Why Japan? Japan’s notoriously horrible reign over the Korean peninsula left deep scars in its relationship with today’s North Korea and South Korea, something continually perceived in the ways that this particular history is taught, written of, and spoken of (or not), in Japan..."
