A message to the Class of 2020 Bonner Leaders from Wagner Bonner Alum, Brandon Hart: Congratulations on another job well done. I feel as though it was yesterday I was in many of your high school classrooms as your mentor. I am deeply proud of each and everyone of you. The late nights, memories, and time served in your community will always hold a special place in your life.

Today, you join a global community of dedicated, respected individuals. Today, you join a community of leaders that are working in various systems that require changes. I ask you to walk through these next few years continuing to break down boundaries and deconstruct systems of corruption: whether that’s an artist painting murals to bring about advocacy, or a nurse entering medicine. No matter who you are, you matter. You have been given the tools over your 4 years, you are all well equipped to do the very thing you have done in college at a bigger scale.

As a Bonner alum, I can confidently say that my community work has been the most significant part of my professional life. When we choose community, do things for the community, we see the changes we are wishing to see.

This is a message of love, but also a cry for help and ultimately, a call to action. Keep community close. Remain humble and continue to learn and inspire others on your way up. I can’t wait to work side by side many of you soon. Congratulation!

Eric Greco is a Mathematics Major. He has been involved with the Bonner Program and Wagner College since his sophomore year in High School, when he was a student in the Port Richmond Partnership Leadership Academy. Being a PRPLA student prepared him for the work he would do as a Bonner. While in Bonner, he would go on to work with Generation Citizen, P.S.19 and the Food Recovery Network. He will forever be grateful for these experiences as they would change his life. When he arrived at Wagner he started as a Business Major concentrating in Finance, but after working at P.S.19 as an assistant in a dual language class, he realized his love for education. With the help of his friends and the faculty at Wagner he changed Majors at the end of my Sophomore year. He is where he is today because of the Bonner Program and Wagner. His current plan is uncertain at the moment, but going back to school is definitely something he sees himself doing in the future. He wants to thank the Bonner Program and Wagner College for the last 4 years of personal growth, his experiences are something he will remember forever.

Malithi Desilva is a Medical Anthropology major with minors in Chemistry and Civic Engagement. She entered the Bonner program Freshman year as a continuation of her journey with the PRPLA program, but saw from the jump that she wanted to be a part of the Bonner family throughout her Wagner College career. Bonner has helped to spur the path of her passion, gave her some tools, and the support system to travel along it. Her exposure and involvement in placements such as Generation Citizen, Make the Road, Healthy Neighborhoods, NAPELA, and Peer Health Exchange have taught her immensely. She has been exposed to new opportunities both within and beyond her interests, allowing her to further discover and expand herself. Most importantly, the program provided her with the opportunity to start conversations with individuals who she now treasures fondly. With Bonner, she has built upon her cultural competency, communication skills, influential decision-making skills, and became a productive conversationalist, all while surrounded by the most passionate people who spurred on her own passion. The program has allowed her to test, mold, and shape her sense of community and her place in it. To not superficially perform acts for a community, but to understand, build, and grow with a community. All are things she endeavors to apply to her future role as a doctor in the healthcare system as she is currently applying to medical schools!

Gabriella Cowlan is a Sociology Major Concentration in Family Studies and Social Work, with a double minor in Government and Politics and Civic Engagement. She joined the Bonner program during her sophomore year after being recruited by Dr. Bernadette Ludwig and thus began her journey with Bonner as I took on the role of chapter president of the Food Recovery Network. From the friendships and opportunities she has cultivated over the past three years, and she has grown professionally and personally. Above all, the Bonner program has taught her to be a leader and how to advocate for those whose voices go unheard.
Through her experience in Bonner, leading FRN and becoming a Senior Bonner Intern, she realized her love for service could work in tandem with a natural instinct for organization. With Bonner, she was given the opportunity to thrive in event planning and working with volunteer coordination. This directly led to her two previous Internships and her new job at MANNA INC, an affordable housing nonprofit in Washington DC where she will begin her career as a Corporate Development Associate. She would like to thank the Senior Cohort for putting up with my constant Groupme Messages, for the honor of witnessing their growth as students, and for their service and empathy for those around them. She can't wait to see how they’ll change the world!

Marisa Correia is graduating with BSN. She is starting her career as a Registered Nurse but hopes to pursue midwifery. She is hoping to work at a hospital in Boston, Ma, either in Labor and Delivery or Pediatrics. She joined Bonner before she even got to Wagner’s campus. For her first semester she was placed at Food Recovery Network. For her second semester she decided to try out Make the Road because she loves kids. Since then she had continued to do both placements but with more of a focus on Make the Road. Her junior year she became the coordinator for Make the Road which she continued into her senior year. Beyond her placement her and her fellow seniors had weekly seminars where she really got to bond with her cohort and have deep and controversial conversations that she didn’t get in the classroom. Bonner has enhanced her Wagner experience and connected her to amazing people along the way!

Bella Cardenas is a Biology major with a minor in Chemistry. She came into the Bonner Program during her sophomore year, this opportunity has opened so many doors for her. She has been able to be a part of different placements, which include NAPELA, IMPACT, Generation Citizen, Make the Road, Peer- Health Exchange and Bonner Senior Intern. These roles have enabled her to become a stronger college student and individual because they have strengthened her skills in public speaking, time management ,and administration. In addition, these different placements have introduced her to many wonderful individuals, who she will cherish for the rest of her life. Not only was she able to establish great friendships with other Bonner Leaders, but she was also able to create professional relationships with people from outside of Wagner College. Our common goal of advocacy and community service tied our bonds stronger together. The Bonner Program has enabled her to voice her concerns, help those in the community, and overall make her a stronger person. She will use these skills and experiences to help her complete the 15 month accelerated nursing program in the fall at Wagner College. Although her journey with Wagner College is not yet finished, she has been able to complete and graduate with one undergraduate degree while being in the Bonner Program and for that, she will always cherish this opportunity and experience.

Evelin Caballero is a Mathematics major with a minor in Civic Engagement. During her four years in the Bonner Program she has worked with Napela, Make the Road, and the Food Recovery Network. Through seminars and placements, she learned about the experiences of others, about important organizational and time management skills, and was able to gain a new awareness of her civic responsibilities. For her, one of the highlights of the Bonner Program has been the people she has met who exhibited kindness and inspired her through their dedication to their work. Initially, she doubted her ability to be a leader, but knows that you can help others in your own way after learning to go outside her comfort zone. She now makes a greater effort to connect with people and to be more open to asking for support from others. She is grateful for the opportunity she was given to grow and learn, all the lessons she has learned will help her in her future projects career.

Brittany Burke is a Biology major with a minor in Civic Engagement. She is proud to be the first in her family to attend and complete college. She has had many exciting experiences in college, but being in the Bonner Program has given her many eye opening opportunities and friendships that she is grateful to have forged. For example, she was able to make impacts in NAPELA twice a week by helping women from different countries to obtain their American citizenship or help them in different aspects of education. NAPELA enabled her to help different women with literacy, math, and basic everyday skills. In addition, she was able to help younger children through Make the Road, which enabled her to provide knowledge and resources to children who needed extra help in school. These individuals have had impacts in her life and being a part of Bonner has taught her many things which she will cherish while going into a new chapter in life. ,

Terrell Braithwaite is a Sociology major. He began his journey through the Bonner program while staring on a journey of self discovery. His time at Wagner has been eye-opening, which entailed meeting new people, gaining new experiences, adapting to various situations, and above all exploring new horizons that test one's comfortability with self . Terrell has seen the growth of the Food Recovery Network flourish in front of his eyes.Seeing its growth has been beautiful to witness and be a part of, truly a dream come true. Starting out as a small group of Bonner students in the fall of 2016 to now not only having an abundance of Bonners, but also non-Bonner students and faculty volunteers putting in the time and energy into our initiative is a dream he is proud to have achieved with his peers. Although he must end his final chapter in his unforgettable story through Wagner College, he will always love and cherish the memories he forged, the unbreakable bonds he created with friends, the humbled opportunity to work in an amazing organization, and above all the lifelong experiences that have shaped him into the person he is today going into the workforce.
