New School ESL English Language Studies at The New School offers Certificates in English as a Second Language with

The English Language Studies Department is part of the New School for Public Engagement, the New School University in New York City. The department offers intensive classes in English writing, speaking, grammar, and reading. Many of our students are taking intensive English classes in order to be prepared to enter other schools in the New School system, especially Parsons School of Design and Mannes College of Music.

What are you going to do?

• See displays, installations, photos, memorabilia and learn what they are about. 


• Write down 2 words you see anywhere in the gallery and define each of them. Copy how each word is used in the display 


• Take 2 pictures of any objects you see in the gallery that catch your eye.  Explain your choices and their significance

• Add any information about Clive Davis

• Present your Information Speech to class

Thank you Parsons faculty member Bryan Melillo for leading a wonderful hands-on workshop with our ESL+ Design students in
the Making Center. In this lesson students got to learn what a cartoon (art blueprint) is, copy an interior design fabric pattern, and use their personal choice for colors based on color theory. New vocabulary words included fabric swatch, woven, thread, warp and weft, palette, primary, secondary, tertiary, warm, and cool colors, mood, organic and geometric patterns, and more.
