English Language Institute - College of Staten Island/CUNY The English Language Institute office at CSI is open from Monday through Friday 9-5pm Our course of study is designed to challenge and engage students.

The English Language Institute (ELI) of the Center for Global Engagement has offered innovative academic programs for students learning English as a Second Language since the late 1970’s. It belongs to the City University of New York (CUNY) through the College of Staten Island. Students are immersed in the language, culture, and ethnicity of New York City. Classes range from beginner to the advanced level.

ELI Students got the chance to engage in some fantastic and informative historical sightseeing around South Ferry and Battery Park in Lower Manhattan before going to a live performance (in English) of The Metamorphosis by Kafka at the The Theater for the New City. Students also made the most of their trip to Manhattan by looking through the selection of new, used, and rare books during their visit to Strand Bookstore, NYC’s biggest indie bookshop!

Project-based learning? Our students visited the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan with a mission. They had to collect ideas and photos for their end of unit oral presentation. Last Friday they gave speeches about the cosmos, the dinosaurs, and the natural world. Science vocabulary is useful in many professions, and they learned it through this project.
