As part of the senior seminar "Thing Theory in Practice," 14 Global Liberal Studies students spent the semester studying material culture and uncovering the role of "things" when it comes to understanding cultures past and present and the concepts of possessions and agency. Their studies culminated in a student-led exhibition titled "Evocative Objects" and housed at NYU Special Collections on the second floor of Bobst Library.

To create the exhibit, students visited NYU Special Collections NYU Libraries, The Morgan Library & Museum's Thaw Conservation Center, NYPL The New York Public Library's Berg Collection, Bard Graduate Center's "Sightlines" exhibition, and NY. These hands-on experiences taught these students—several of whom are are interested in pursuing future work in museums and archiving—about the challenges of preservation, the complexities of displaying sensitive materials, the effect placement has on meaning, and the many forms of value that objects may hold.
This exhibit is on display on the second floor of Bobst until January 19, 2024. Those who visit will also receive postcards that feature the exhibition objects.
