Hi Legal Tech Society,

We invite students (1Ls, 2Ls, 3Ls, and LLMs) with an interest in how technology can improve and transform the practice of law to participate in a workshop series hosted at Columbia Law School in partnership with Neota Logic. The first workshop in the series will take place on Friday, February 28 from 1pm - 3pm. Lunch will be provided.

Through this series of workshops, we hope to equip students with a knowledge base of easy-to-use tools, designed for non-programmers, that students can use to build their own legal tech applications and solutions.

This workshop series will build towards the ultimate goal of sending one team (or more) from Columbia to Brooklyn Law School's Annual CUBE Innovations Invitational, a legal tech startup competition open to law students throughout New York, in April - https://www.brooklaw.edu/Centers/CUBE/Innovators-Invitational

Keep reading for more information the workshop opportunity.

If you would like to participate in the first workshop on February 28, please RSVP by emailing Alison Hung at [email protected] no later than 11:59pm on Tuesday, February 25. We will follow up with registered participants with more details, including a Neota Logic account log-in, closer to the date.

What is Neota Logic? Neota is an award-winning no-code AI automation platform, providing professionals with a wide range of easy-to-use tools to rapidly build applications that automate any aspect of their services.

1) I don't have any programming experience or skills. Can I still participate?
That's perfect! Neota is designed for people who are not programmers, and you will learn everything you need to build an app at the workshops, led by Kevin Mulcahy (VP, Education & Community Programs, Neota Logic and Adjunct Professor of Law, Georgetown Law). All you need is a laptop, a commitment to learning how to build an application in Neota's platform, and an interest in leveraging technology to develop solutions to legal problems.

2) I'm interested in participating, but I don't have any specific ideas for an app. Is that okay?
Yes -- as part of the workshop series, Neota Logic will provide some sample application topics/concepts to guide students' learning. Our hope is that through this process, students will be inspired to develop their own ideas.

3) What is the overall timeline and structure of the workshop series?
The workshop series will consist of 4 workshops (at Columbia Law School), and students who want to participate will have the opportunity to pitch an idea at the CUBE Invitational at Brooklyn Law School. Each participant will receive their own Neota log-in and ongoing technical support from Neota (for those who want to work on v1 of their app on their own time).

We encourage students to attend all of the workshops and participate in the CUBE Invitational to get the most out of this opportunity, but participation in the competition is not required.

Deadline - February 7th

The Columbia Pre-Law Society and the Athena Pre-Law Society invite all members of the LegalTech Society to the 8th year of our undergraduate mentoring program in partnership with Columbia Law School. Each year we have grown in applications and mentor sign-ups, and we are excited for this year to be our best yet! In order to make this program as productive as possible for both mentors and mentees, we are going to provide several different types of programming.

There are two events for both mentors and mentees that you would love you to attend as they are mandatory for the undergraduates. The events are not mandatory for mentors. The dates are as follows (and dinner will be provided):

Meet and Greet: February 20th, 2020 (James Room, 4th Floor of Barnard Hall)
Networking Dinner: March 28th, 2020 (James Room)

****The date of the second event is subject to change as APLS is aware of the annual Barristers Ball. We will do our best to move the event to the first week of April****

In addition to these events, we suggest that mentors meet with their mentees one on one to get the most out of their relationship, with activities such as giving an informal tour of the law school and inviting mentees to sit in on a lecture law class. If you are unable to commit to these aspects of the mentorship, then we are happy to accommodate you and ask an available mentor to take on a small group of students so that all mentees get a chance to participate.
