Reimagining course design for the AI era 💡

This past weekend, we were proud to host language educators from nine institutions for the Consortium for Language Teaching and Learning (CLTL) workshop: “Coherent Course Design in the Era of Generative AI.”

Gathered at The Lantern in Columbia’s Lenfest Center for the Arts, language faculty spent an intensive day working in small groups to redesign aspects of course policy, classroom tasks, and assessment to adapt to the AI era. Congratulations to the faculty organizing committee (featured in the last photo) for their months of hard work and a truly successful workshop!

It was wonderful to be joined last week by Dr. Michele Back of the UConn Neag School of Education for an insightful workshop on translanguaging and multilingual identity in the language classroom. 💡📚

Columbia language faculty gathered to explore how strategic L1 (first language) use can actually strengthen target-language engagement, foster agency, and affirm student language backgrounds.

Thank you to Dr. Back and all the faculty who participated in this important conversation on modern language pedagogy!

New Publication Alert! 📖🌿

We are pleased to celebrate the release of The Climate Turn in Language Teaching by our colleagues Francisca Aguiló-Mora (LAIC) and Almudena Marin-Cobos (SLAC), published by Cambridge University Press.

This insightful work introduces a sustainable approach to teaching second and heritage languages by weaving climate education directly into basic language programs.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026! 🎓🦁

Today, as Columbia celebrates Commencement, we are feeling extra proud, and a little emotional. The Language Resource Center is saying a bittersweet graduation goodbye to two of our amazing, long-time student assistants, Jarea and Ben!

If you’ve stopped by the LRC over the past few years, chances are you’ve been helped by their bright smiles, tech savvy, and endless dedication. They have been the heartbeat of our center, making the LRC a welcoming space for language learners across campus.

Jarea and Ben, thank you for the countless hours, the laughs, and the incredible impact you’ve left on our community. We are so grateful for everything you’ve given to the LRC, and we know you are going to do big things in your next chapters.

Sato Moughalian and Ryan Nazari, both Ph.D. students enrolled in Armenian classes at Columbia, speak about their experiences and reasons for learning the language. They discuss the complex background of Armenian, which forms its own distinct, independent branch within the Indo-European language family. They detail how their own personal and family stories intertwine with histories of genocide, forced migration, music, art, ceramics, weaving, and what it means to be Armenian today.

Two languages, four words, and a lot of personality! 🇭🇺🇲🇲

We sat down with Ben, Gabe, and Gaya for a quick round of “Four Words, Two Ways.” Watch as we compare how to say “Hi,” “Thank you,” “Friend,” and “University” in Hungarian and Burmese.

It’s amazing to hear how these two unique languages sound side-by-side. Which version was your favorite to learn? Let us know in the comments! 👇
