πŸ‹ The Whale That Blows Bubbles While Resting

S***m whales have one of the strangest resting behaviors ever documented in the ocean. Instead of floating normally at the surface, they can remain almost motionless in a vertical position just below the water.

For years, scientists wondered how these enormous whales could stay suspended without slowly floating upward.

A new study published in 2026 may have answered that mystery.

Researchers placed suction cup tags on 42 s***m whales off the coast of Norway. The tags recorded their movements, depth, and sounds while they were resting.

The researchers discovered that the whales released bubbles during these resting periods. Computer simulations showed that releasing the bubbles can reduce the whale's natural tendency to float upward, helping it maintain a nearly neutral position beneath the surface.

This is especially important because s***m whales are naturally buoyant. Their large heads contain s***maceti, a waxy substance that contributes to their buoyancy.

The whales also spend much of their lives making extremely deep dives in search of prey. After returning from these dives, resting near the surface may help them recover while avoiding the movement of surface waves.

Scientists are careful to call this behavior resting rather than confirmed sleeping because they have not yet measured the whales' brain activity during these periods.

Even so, the discovery suggests that s***m whales may have an incredibly precise way of controlling their position in the water, even while resting.

A giant whale quietly blowing bubbles may actually be performing a sophisticated underwater balancing act.

πŸ‹ She Had Done This Before

In January 2025, researchers witnessed a heartbreaking scene in the waters of Puget Sound.

A female Southern Resident killer whale known as J35 Tahlequah was carrying the body of her newborn calf.

Tahlequah had already become famous around the world for doing something remarkably similar in 2018.

That year, her newborn calf died shortly after birth. Tahlequah continued carrying the calf's body for 17 days and traveled more than 1,000 miles with her family.

Then, years later, history appeared to repeat itself.

Tahlequah gave birth again in December 2024. Researchers identified the newborn as J61, a female calf. Sadly, the calf survived for only about a week and was confirmed dead on December 31.

On January 1, 2025, NOAA researchers observed Tahlequah carrying J61's body through Puget Sound.

The scientists also saw another newborn Southern Resident calf nearby, J62, which appeared healthy.

Researchers cannot say exactly what Tahlequah was feeling. Scientists generally avoid describing animal behavior as human emotions unless there is evidence to support it.

But the behavior was extraordinary.

Tahlequah continued to keep her dead calf near the surface as she traveled with her family, just as she had done years earlier.

Her story also highlights the challenges facing Southern Resident killer whales, an endangered population that depends heavily on Chinook salmon.

For Tahlequah, this was not simply another sighting.

It was a heartbreaking repeat of a scene scientists had hoped never to witness again.
