Charity. It's true, generosity lies in giving beyond what feels comfortable; there's no limit to the difference we might then make.
Teaching is not just a profession; it's a transformative journey that shapes futures. Milton Glaser, a legendary figure in the creative world, once shared with me- at the time he was convincingly arguing the case for why I should become a teacher and follow in his footsteps. He highlighted to me the profound impact of education, describing it as a source of inspiration and a window into how new generations if it is imagined well, will give students the authority to tackle the issues that define their times. This rings true in the stories of Jessica Tillyer and Larry Luk, former students in design at Miami Ad School Atlanta who have used their design education to make significant contributions to others and to society.
Last week at the APEX for Youth’s, DREAM OUT LOU awards and gala in New York, Jessica and Larry showcased what showing-up where the poser of design is used in addressing vital community needs , at APEX's gala for Asian American youth. This event, which they each helped uplift, collectively, successfully raised $3 million in one night—a testament to the impact of their design education's and commitment at Miami Ad School.
Jessica Tillyer today leads RoandCo as President, in New York (https://www.roandcostudio.com), helping steer projects that forge responsible, for meaningful brands across major cities, while Larry Luk, in Atlanta is Senior Creative Director of AMB SPORTS + ENTERTAINMENT, directing the creative experiences for the Atlanta Falcons, the Atlanta United and Mercedes Benz stadium (https://blankfamilyofbusinesses.com/company/amb-sports-entertainment/). Proving the extensive reach and value of a design education— and it points out how other generations are responding to events and things that matter in their own lifetime.
Their achievements illustrate a profound value of design and learning in design. It's not just about building a career; it's about crafting a responsive, thoughtful life that contributes to a wider community. At Miami Ad School, we don’t just teach design—we inspire design and define creators to shape their world. Larry Luk and Jessica Tillyer are doing just that; we are proud of them.
