Meet the Macaulay alumni making an impact in Washington, D.C.

Macaulay alumnus Thomas J. Rachko, Jr. ’15 created Alumni Changemakers in DC, a short film highlighting four Macaulay graduates putting their expertise to work in leadership roles in Washington, D.C., and beyond.

The film also helped bring Thomas and featured alumna Kerin Shilla ’21, PhD, together to present at the Critical Migration and Deportation Studies Conference at Baruch College, CUNY.

Earlier this month, the Scholars Council went upstate for their retreat to Frost Valley! Macaulay's student leaders enjoyed a weekend of bonding through ziplining, outdoor rock climbing, kayaking, fireside chats, and many more activities! Thank you to the Student Development team for organizing the lodging, travel experience, schedules for all the group circles, activities, and information sessions. Through this bonding experience, the class representatives and student leaders are able to better serve their community over the course of the year. They are all eager to serve Macaulay's students in the 2026-27 academic year!

THEN: As a Macaulay Scholar at Brooklyn College, Maisha Kamal ’19 combined her interests in business economics, English, public policy, and human rights with deep involvement in the Macaulay community. She served first as Vice President of IT/Communications on the Macaulay Scholars Council and then as President during the 2017–18 academic year, helping strengthen communication and community across Macaulay’s eight campuses. She was also a recipient of the prestigious Jeannette K. Watson Fellowship, which provided three years of internships, mentoring, and professional development.

NOW: Maisha is an associate at Proskauer Rose in New York, where she practices in executive compensation and employee benefits. She earned her B.B.A. from Macaulay Honors College in 2019 and her J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2023. In recent years, she has contributed to legal analysis on non-compete agreements and the Department of Labor’s proposed rules governing 401(k) investment options. She has also advised on major cross-border corporate transactions, including McCormick’s $44.8 billion combination with Unilever’s global foods business.

Matthew Zhou '27 (City) was awarded the 2026 Hoffman Scholarship which provides architecture students with tuition support and paid internship. He helped prepare building assessment reports, observed how architects and contractors work together to solve problems and more.

“We were impressed with the high caliber of this year’s applicants, which made selecting just one awardee challenging,” noted Alison Hoffmann, Chair of the Hoffmann Community Action Committee, which runs the scholarship program. “Matthew stood out for his stellar academic performance, as well as his heartfelt narratives about the value of humility and community in architectural preservation. In just three years of collegiate study, he has managed to develop the kind of nuanced and empathic perspective it often takes years of experience to cultivate.”

Macaulay believes that part of its educational mission as a New York City public honors college means investing in our students' civic mobility opportunities. As they move into their careers, Macaulay students will one day inherit this city. So, what infrastructure do we need to build to support this transition? 🌉

Two weeks ago, we hosted the kickoff meeting for our Data Clinic program. The premise is simple: it is a team-based experience in which students use data and research to address a real-world policy challenge facing New York City. The NYC Commission on Gender Equity has asked our students to develop data-informed recommendations to address street harassment faced by young people.

In the coming weeks, the students will research, analyze, and present their findings to the staff of the Mayor’s Office. We hope the experience does more than strengthen their data analysis and storytelling skills. Ultimately, we want students to realize the power of their voices and the potential of their ideas to shape our city's future.
