On Thursday, April 30, “El Salvador 1932: del colonialismo al CECOT” will take place at the Graduate Center. This full-day symposium revisits the history of “La Matanza,” the 1932 massacres of Indigenous peoples in El Salvador, and traces how these events shaped ongoing cycles of violence, state formation, and struggles over memory and justice. Check the full schedule on our website!

The event brings together scholars, artists, and Indigenous leaders to reflect on how these histories continue to resonate today, from questions of land and sovereignty to contemporary forms of state violence. Held in the context of the 25th UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, the symposium will include Indigenous delegates and contributors working on memory, archives, and community-based forms of justice. As we approach the 100th anniversary of 1932, this gathering opens a space for dialogue, reflection, and collective efforts toward accountability and reparation.

Join us next Tuesday, April 28 at the Graduate Center for the book launch of Atusparia (2024) with author Gabriela Wiener.

The novel follows a leftist militant imprisoned in a high-security facility in the Amazon after becoming a victim of lawfare. Adopting the name “Atusparia,” she retraces her political formation, activism, internal conflicts, and eventual questioning of the meaning of struggle. Blending political fiction, autobiography, and satire, the book reflects on the contradictions of the Latin American left and the role of affect in political life.

Gabriela Wiener is a writer, journalist, and performer whose work moves across chronicle and autofiction, exploring the intersections of the intimate and the political.

Join us next Monday, April 27 at 6:30 PM for the book launch of Caught in the Current with author Irvin IbargĂŒen.

The book tells a lesser-known story: Mexico’s attempts and failures to control emigration to the United States. Across four decades, officials imposed moratoriums, launched “stay-at-home” campaigns, and even clashed with their own citizens at the border, yet none of it held. Internal corruption, migrant resistance, and the pull of the U.S. reshaped the outcome.
