This week, AOII would like to highlight three incredible Black alumnae of Barnard and Columbia. These women, in the face of the racism and adversity they experienced while attending the university, achieved incredible things. Their work in the medical, literary, and architectural fields are only a snippet of the milestones that Black alums of the University have achieved.

As the first week of Black History Month comes to a close, we wanted to reflect upon the history of Anti-Blackness at Barnard College. This post is based upon the work of Hannah Eyob, a participant in the Columbia University & Slavery project that ran from 2015 until 2017. The original course, taught by Professor Eric Foner, conducted research on the history of Columbia in it's early days at King's College until the end of the Civil War. The findings from the class were then presented to President Bollinger to create the Columbia University & Slavery Project. Professors Jakoby and Thai from the History Department taught courses in 2016 and 2017, the result being more research conducted and published by both students and faculty. To do more reading on the university's relationship to slavery, please visit the link in our bio.

Please help us celebrate Olivia's Day. Olivia's Day, named after Alpha member, Olivia Erhardt, celebrates the legacy of her tragically short life. We honor her memory by being kind, generous, and showing love to one another. This year we are celebrating Olivia's Day by hosting a bake sale. AOII will be selling single, half dozen, and dozens of linzer cookies (shortbread cookies w jam in between the two). All of the proceeds will go to a place near and dear to her heart, the L.O.V.E. Fund. Orders can be placed via the link in the bio until February 11th. Pickup will take place on Valentine's Day in Lerner Hall.

Ever wanted to try a menstrual cup? We're partnering with AllMatters and Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Chapter, Columbia University to offer free menstrual cups to students via CampusCup!

Menstrual cups are a reusable alternative to pads and tampons that collect instead of absorb blood. AllMatters menstrual cups are made of 100% silicone, can be worn comfortably for up to 12 hours without leakage, and can last for years with proper care. Typically, menstrual cups retail for $20 to $40, so we're super excited to offer them for free!

Sign up here: https://bit.ly/3uxObF2
Or scan the QR code below to sign up!
The form is open today, October 4th through next Sunday, October 17th.

Cups will be available to pickup after the campaign concludes (so sometime after Monday, October 18th). No products will be available upon signup, so stay tuned for an email later this month notifying on how, when, and where to pick up your menstrual cup.

AOII and Alpha Chapter are taking a stand against racially based violence and abuse of power, and are committed to continuing to have conversation and programing centered around action against racism and racial violence. Greek Life has been used historically to preserve white spaces in universities. As Columbia University students, we recognize this oppressive history, and Alpha Chapter is actively working to create and promote tangible ways that we can educate our members and the Greek community at large, and denounce racial violence and prejudice on this campus- beyond simply continuing with our current inclusive initiatives. We hope to be a resource for ways to show solidarity and enact change against anti-Blackness and abuse of power. There is always more to learn and do.

This past week, AOII sponsored two nights of meals for the amazing staff at the New York Presbyterian Hospital ICU. AOII sister Samantha Chong's father, Dr. David Chong, works in the ICU and has been organizing meals and fundraising for his colleagues every night. We're so lucky to be able to support some of the incredible people who have been at the front lines of this crisis.
