Congratulations to Hunter’s Dr. Sherry Greenberg, who has been elected secretary of the Gerontological Society of America!

Dr. Greenberg was chosen by a membership of more than 6,000 researchers, educators, and practitioners across more than 60 countries. When she assumes the role on January 1, 2027, she'll serve on the society's Board of Directors, helping guide governance, strategic planning, and organizational direction at the oldest and largest interdisciplinary organization focused on aging.

The inaugural Evelyn Lauder Chair in Adult Gerontology and a past president of the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association, Dr. Greenberg also stepped into a new role this month at Hunter as Interim Evelyn Lauder Associate Dean for Nurse Practitioner Programs.

"We congratulate Dr. Greenberg on her election to a national leadership position at the Gerontological Society of America, a tremendous interprofessional honor and recognition of her expertise, scholarship, and commitment to improving the lives of older adults," said Dr. Ann Marie Mauro, Joan Hansen Grabe Dean and Professor, Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing.

Congratulations, Dr. Greenberg!

Congratulations to Dr. Aliza Ben-Zacharia, PhD, DNP, ANP-BC, FAAN, who has been elected a Distinguished Colleague of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN)!

The AAN designation is the American Academy of Neurology’s highest formal distinction for non-physician members, recognizing exemplary engagement with the Academy, special achievement in the field, and an ongoing commitment to professionalism and leadership in neurology. Dr. Ben-Zacharia’s career, from her clinical work with patients living with multiple sclerosis to her research and teaching at the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing, reflects exactly that. We’re so proud to have her on our faculty. Congratulations, Dr. Ben-Zacharia!

Congratulations to Hunter’s Althea Castro, BSN ’27, one of only two undergraduates selected for the inaugural Flynn Fellowship at Calvary Hospital in The Bronx.

All summer, Althea cared for patients with advanced cancer and other life-limiting illnesses alongside her nurse preceptor, while completing an evidence-based practice project, “Comparative Analysis of Advance Care Planning Interventions for Adults with Advanced Cancer.” Calvary Chief Nursing Officer Linda Valentino called the work outstanding, praising Althea's ability to identify a critical research gap and build it into a meaningful project.

A Bronx native who had never worked with cancer patients before, Althea answered their needs with dignity and compassion. “I could not have been prouder of how exceptionally she represented us,” said Associate Professor Tara Heagele, her advisor.

Read more below — congratulations, Althea.

Congratulations to Dr. Ellen McCabe, assistant professor at the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing, who has been named to the American Academy of Nursing’s 2026 Class of Fellows — one of the highest honors in the profession.

A practicing school nurse as well as a scholar and educator, Dr. McCabe has built her career around a simple belief: Every child deserves access to care, compassion, and opportunity. Her research and advocacy have focused on making sure immigrant and underserved children receive culturally responsive care, and that schools have the resources to support them.

Congratulations, Dr. McCabe!

Today, on what would have been Evelyn Lauder’s 90th birthday, we are thrilled to announce the incoming cohort of Fellows in the Evelyn Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Program.

Evelyn Lauder was a proud graduate of Hunter College, with an unwavering dedication to women’s health and community care, and her commitment endures through the nurse leaders who carry her name — training in NYC Health + Hospitals facilities and preparing to deliver primary care where it's needed most.

Congratulations to our newest Lauder Fellows!
