TODAY! Join Institute of Latin American Studies at Columbia University and the Greater Caribbean Center at Columbia | SIPA for a screening of: Dreadlocks Story: A Documentary on Rastafarian Culture
Filmed in four countries (Jamaica, India, France, and the US), in four languages (Jamaican Patois, Hindi, French, and English), and with four local crews, this documentary explores the connections between descendants of African slaves and Indian indentured servants in Jamaica in the making of Rastafari culture.
Screening followed by conversation with the film's director, Dr. Linda Aïnouche, and Professor Jose Moya.
Linda Aïnouche was born in France, and has ended up in New York City after having lived in a couple of countries. She is an anthropologist who loves working with misunderstood communities all over the world, and grew up as a child with parents from two different cultures. She came out with this project to give a new platform to both Rastafari movement and Indian legacy. No doubt, she owns a background which drives her to know the amazing and important results of cultural sources as well as the difficulties to accept and combine them.
Jose Moya is the Director of the Forum on Migration, Director of the Institute of Latin American Studies at Columbia and Professor of History at Barnard College.
Hosted by the Greater Caribbean Studies Center and the Forum on Migration.
