NYU Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality professor Dr. Richie Karaburun is quoted in this Forbes article regarding how the "World Cup Windfall Could Bypass Broadway."

"[D]uring the World Cup some may avoid Manhattan because of traffic, congestion, transit pressure, security measures, and the general difficulty of moving around,” emphasized New York University professor Richie Karaburun. “For those audiences, the issue is not hotel prices,” he clarified. “It is convenience.”

Professor Karaburun concluded that “Broadway could see a double effect.” “[S]ome tourists may spend less because the trip is more expensive, while some local and regional audiences may simply decide it is not worth the hassle during peak World Cup periods.”

This Spring Semester, students in Data Analytics and Visualization focused on integrating AI and EI. The importance of growing their network and connecting with classmates, while advancing data analysis and executive presentations were key takeaways of the class. The students broadcasted their final presentations to Stephen Rushmore, CEO at HVS who is located in Cape Town, South Africa.

Adjunct Professor Laura Kalcevic says, “the students are brilliant and it was great seeing how they were able to use AI and known data analysis tools and techniques to produce cutting-edge presentations. Also, to see how they were able to connect socially and innovate as a group.”

NYU Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality professor Christine Cleaver was quoted in a Sportico article on how the recent Long Island Rail Road strike is exposing the fragile dependence of New York sports and the upcoming FIFA World Cup on mass transit infrastructure.

"'I'm hoping World Cup planners are watching what’s going on with this, because the thing that is really important is they need to really be looking at contingency planning,' Cleaver said. 'It no longer can be secondary. Disruptions will happen.'"

On April 27, 2026, the NYU Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality partnered with Bloom Consulting to host "Nation and Place Branding," a book launch and expert panel discussion for Dr. Richie Karaburun's new book that was co-authored by Jose Filipe Torres, CEO of Bloom Consulting. Bringing together leaders from organizations like New York City Tourism + Conventions, This is Cleveland, Visit Philly, and Visit Tulsa, the discussion offered a real-world look into how cities define themselves and shape global perception.

A major theme throughout the conversation was the difference between branding and marketing. Branding was described as the “heart” of a place, the emotional essence that defines how a destination feels and what it represents. The panelists emphasized that without a strong brand foundation, marketing efforts lack meaning, but without marketing, a brand cannot effectively reach its audience. The two must work together, but branding should always lead. Another key takeaway was the idea that destinations are often “friends and not competitors.” While cities may compete for visitors, talent, and investment, they also rely heavily on collaboration, especially internally.

To close, the panelists offered advice for students interested in entering the industry, emphasizing the importance of gaining experience early, building relationships, and staying open-minded. They highlighted that careers in this space are rarely linear and that success often comes from making connections and being willing to explore different paths. Above all, they encouraged students to stay authentic and not feel pressured to emulate others, reinforcing the same principle that defines strong place branding.

Thank you to our panelists and guest speakers for participating in this event, offering their insights, and for contributing to a successful and engaging Book Launch!

David Gilbert (President & CEO of Destination Cleveland)
Nancy Mammana (Chief Marketing Officer of New York City Tourism + Conventions)
Neil Frauenglass (Chief Marketing Officer of Visit Philadelphia)

NYU Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality adjunct professor Anna Abelson is quoted in a recent CNN Travel article on the departure taxes charged to leave a country when traveling.

"'As tourists, we have to be mindful that we put a lot of strain on resources. We're using water, we are using electricity, we are using the roads, and they do need to kind of offset that,' says Anna Abelson, a hospitality professor at New York University."

Last week, the NYU Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality and the NYU SPS Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies welcomed high school students from 3 NAF for our event, From Perseverance to Success in Hospitality. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School, New Utrecht High School, and the High School for Enterprise, Business, and Technology came together to create a vibrant, collaborative space centered on growth, opportunity, and connection.🌟

The session highlighted the power of perseverance and explored accessible pathways through the AAS degree in Hospitality Management—opening doors to future careers and possibilities.

We were honored to hear from Dr. Richie Karaburun, who shared his inspiring journey of immigrating to the United States and becoming a professor at NYU. His message resonated deeply: stay committed to your passions and pursue what fulfills you. Nine students were raffle winners of his book "The Power of Perseverance!"

Students also connected with members of NSMH NYU, gaining insight into a “day in the life” of an NYU student, while learning about the admissions process and support systems available through the SPS Admissions team and Career Pathways Bridge Program.

The day concluded with student-led tours from Tisch Center students—an energizing close to a meaningful experience filled with inspiration, curiosity, and community.

We look forward to continuing to connect with and support the next generation of hospitality leaders.
