Dance and New Media;
Integrating Dance and Technology
In University Dance Programs
A Conference at
The Department of Dance
New York University
April 7 & 8, 2017
This is a conference designed for faculty who teach Dance for the Camera, Video, interactive media, multimedia dance, or any variation on dance and new media or technology in their university dance department curriculums. We also want t
o invite arts organizations, arts technology departments, or new media and performance programs that encourage collaboration with dance. The purpose of the conference is to discuss how dance departments, and technology and performance programs can integrate new media into their curriculums in a way that both teaches students appropriate technologies and opens them up to creative possibilities in the expanding field of new media. We will use this as an opportunity to explore how various universities are building programs within their existing curriculums, interfacing with existing technology and film or arts programs, and what strategies work inside departments for building relationships between classes in new media or technology and existing classes in choreography. Important in this discussion will be the idea of fostering collaboration with a range of other artists and art forms and discussion of how to make that central to a student’s understanding of what it is to be a digital and collaborative artist. Topics:
• Integrating technology/art into traditional dance departments.
• Creating engaging and useful curriculum for dancers.
• Teaching across departments.
• Building new media programs.
• Funding and equipment purchase.
• Building new media labs.
