Ever wonder what it’s like to study away at NYU Florence? Belle Huang, a Junior at NYU Gallatin, is sharing a glimpse into life at Villa la Pietra!

🌍What is your day-to-day like at NYU Florence?

Life at NYU Florence is so special that I decided to stay another semester! I’m taking Italian, Photojournalism, Race and Racialization in Italy, and Culture of the City. Between classes, I get to take in the incredible gardens at Villa La Pietra or the panoramic views of Florence. It’s such a vibrant city with endless things to explore—I can’t wait to do it all again in the spring.

🌍How do you spend your free time?

I love walking to Ponte Santa Trinita to watch the sunset (especially when there’s live music!). My friends and I also love exploring Florence’s amazing food scene—a cooking class is a must. And every Wednesday, we listen to live jazz at one of our favorite clubs.

🌍Favorite memory so far?

My top trips have to be visiting the Dolomites early in the semester and attending Milan Fashion Week, where I photographed my sister. Studying abroad is the perfect time to experience the world and discover where you belong in it.

🚨Cool Course Alert!🚨

We’re excited to share that Gallatin’s Travel Course Naples: Theater of the Earth has been recognized as a cool course by NYU News! The one-of-a-kind course, led by NYU Gallatin Professors Kristin Horton and Karen Holmberg, takes students to Naples, Italy, to explore volcanism, ancient theater, and the art of communicating risk in a community shaped by nature.

“Students from any discipline can find a way into this course, so what matters most is curiosity and a willingness to slow down,” says Kristin Horton. “The tools we use—such as sensory mapping, ensemble exercises, and place-based research—help students develop an ability to combine artistic and scientific perspectives, and by doing so, expand our research questions.”

“Seeing volcanological practice in action offered a very different perspective of the field,” says Gallatin student Abby Betts ‘27. Betts added that it was a unique experience studying the volcano from a scientific approach while being aware of the “dangers the volcano poses both in general and to the monitoring room itself, due to its position within the red zone of Campi Flegrei.”

Meet Gabriela Pinasco (MA ‘26) a 2025 Gallatin Global Human Rights Fellow, who partnered with Fundación Pumamaqui, in Quito/Napo Province, Ecuador! This organization seeks to preserve the natural wealth of ecosystems and the cultural legacy of its communities.

💜What is your concentration?

News and Documentary at the Journalism School, GSAS.

💜What made you apply for the fellowship?

I applied to the fellowship because it aligns with my focus as a journalist covering human rights. It offered me the opportunity to work on one of the most pressing issues affecting my country and the sovereignty of its Indigenous peoples: mining, which devastates the Amazon while polluting its rivers and soil.

💜What was your experience like as a GFHR fellow?

I had the chance to lead workshops with the Kichwua community of Serena in the Ecuadorian Amazon, sharing communication tools to help strengthen their struggle against mining. At the same time, I was able to document Indigenous resistance to defend their territory during a critical moment in Ecuador, as the government had just eliminated the Ministry of Environment. In the end, I realized I learned far more from the community than I could ever give back.

💜What is one piece of advice you would give someone interested in applying?

This fellowship is an incredible opportunity for those working in human rights. My advice is to always listen, reflect, and allow yourself to see the world through the eyes of others. That is the only way to truly understand some of humanity’s most complex challenges.

Meet Hei Ho (MA’26) a 2025 Gallatin Global Human Rights Fellow, who partnered with the Media Defence a non-profit located in London that provides legal help to journalists, citizen journalists and independent media across the world.

💜What is your concentration?

My academic work predominantly centres on transnational solidarity and advocacy.

💜What made you apply for the fellowship?

I saw GFHR as a valuable opportunity to connect with peers committed to human rights as well as to broaden my understanding of the field beyond my primary focus on freedom of expression.

💜What was your experience like as a GFHR fellow?

It is hard to sum up, but overall the fellowship equipped me with stronger theoretical foundations and encouraged me to ask critical questions — something I believe is particularly important in a field that can sometimes present itself as beyond question.

💜What is one piece of advice you would give someone interested in applying?

Trust that your perspective and experiences hold weight, however incremental they might seem.

Meet Anushka Vachani (BA ‘27), a 2025 Gallatin Global Human Rights Fellow, who partnered with the The Refugee Law Clinic in their London office!

💜What is your concentration?

My concentration is in Public Policy, Human Rights and Legal Studies, focusing on how legal and policy frameworks can address systematic inequalities and promote social justice. I explore the intersection of law and human rights to develop solutions that empower marginalized communities.

💜 What made you apply for the fellowship?

I was encouraged by my advisor, and as I explored the program further, I was especially inspired by the GFHR Blog, where I read about past fellows’ experiences and the incredible organizations they worked with on human rights issues they were passionate about.

💜 What was your experience like as a GFHR fellow?
It was an eye-opening and transformative experience. It helped bridge the gap between my academic studies and the kind of work I hope to pursue in the field. The fellowship also played a key role in shaping my concentration and clarifying my future goals. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to travel to London and engage with an issue I care about on a global scale.

💜 What is one piece of advice you would give someone interested in applying?

I’d encourage anyone who’s applying to be open-minded. I did not have prior experience in the field, and I was unfamiliar with the city I ended up working in, but the fellowship helped me step outside my comfort zone and gain new experiences and skills.
