It was with great sadness that I learned of Alphie’s passing. An incredibly gifted storyteller, his great wit was always accompanied by his gentle spirit. Alphie was a generous supporter of the CUNY Institute for Irish American Studies (he was honored for his service to Irish America in 2012), and was a frequent speaker at our Lehman College City and Humanities, where he and Malachy entranced the students with story, and surprised them with song. The world has lost one of the truly good ones, but surely Alphie is quietly holding court in the corner of wherever it is we go at the end. Thoughts are with Lynn and Alison.
