NYC City Council’s Manhattan Delegation Honors BMCC’s 60 Years of Community Commitment
BMCC celebrated graduates from the Registered Nursing (RN) and Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) programs' Spring 2026 graduating class during a Nursing Pinning Ceremony held May 28 in Theatre 1 at 199 Chambers Street. During the ceremony, New York City Council Member Christopher Marte presented BMCC with an official Proclamation from the New York City Council, signed by all members of the Manhattan delegation, honoring the College’s 60 years of commitment to the community.
Council Member Marte, who grew up on the Lower East Side and represents a district that includes BMCC, shared that he took classes at BMCC and that both his mother and brother graduated from the College.
BMCC President Dr. Anthony E. Munroe reminded graduates that nursing is not just a career but a calling. “You will encounter laughter and tears, triumph and tragedy,” he said. “In each of those moments your presence, your empathy, and your unwavering advocacy will matter.”
Also offering remarks was Dr. Sandra Lindsay, DHSc, RN, FAAN, Vice President of Public Health Advocacy at Northwell Health, BMCC Foundation Board Member, and a 1994 graduate of BMCC’s Nursing program. Having participated in a BMCC Nursing Pinning Ceremony herself, Dr. Lindsay returned to celebrate the Class of 2026. Dr. Lindsay is widely recognized as the first person in the United States to receive an authorized COVID-19 vaccine and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2022. Reflecting on her own pinning ceremony, she described it as one of the proudest moments of her life.
The Proclamation states, in part, that the Nursing Pinning Ceremony honors not only the graduates’ achievements but also BMCC’s legacy of educating and inspiring generations of healthcare professionals and civic leaders.
