Spotlight on KATY PYLE part 2! Lang Dance students in "excerpt from LesBi(s)ches" by Katy Pyle from the Fall 2016 Lang Dance Production.

Katy has taught ballet practices in the Lang Dance Program since 2016! How wonderful to have the director of Ballez, a genderq***r ballet company, teaching in our program. A perfect fit, in so many ways.

photos by Frank Mullaney

Upcoming: Katy made a new Story Ballez and there is currently a free-to-stream documentary about the process on ALL ARTS (WNET/PBS)!

Travesty Doll Play Ballez (after Coppélia) continues Ballez’s mission to radically reimagine the ballet canon. Coppélia was originally performed as a travesty ballet in 1870 in Paris. Ballez brings that his/her/theirstory to light with an entirely trans and non-binary cast, making clear that gender variance and transgression have long been a part of ballet, and that Ballez dancers are its rightful inheritors. This new story ballet focuses on the relationship between the Dolls and their Doll-Maker, meditating on cycles of abuse between teachers and students, on control and freedom, on fake and real, and on perpetually being forced to automate the performance of gender in order to belong... ultimately, these dolls play with mainstream notions of gender until they fall apart.

PREMIERE-
May 24-26, Chelsea Factory, NYC
tickets $20-40

Before the premiere even happens, you can check out the brand new documentary, TRAVESTY, about the process. TRAVESTY streams on ALL ARTS on apple and android devices, apple tv, roku and amazon fire tv.

Ta da! On this, my 65th birthday, I hereby unveil my new website.

I've been working hard on reworking the site to avoid a promotional tone, and instead to simply provide information, written in 1st person (me!).

Many thanks to Kritika Dhariwal for her wonderful work on the design.

What do you think? (Feel free to alert me to any typos or broken links, or...)

Focus on STACY MATTHEW SPENCE pt 3: Lang Dance students in "This is how we got here" by Stacy Matthew Spence from the Fall 2017 Lang Dance Production.

Stacy has performances THIS WEEK: "I am, here; Here with us; Where we find ourselves" a new dance in triptych form, at Danspace Project at Saint Mark's Church, Thurs-Sat March 21-23 at 7:30pm.

A longtime member of Trisha Brown Dance Company (1997-2006), an educator, and performer, Stacy's work often explores the exchange between person and environment. Presently, he brings his attention to the internal space of “me”– as a personal environment to be outwardly created, expressed, occupied, and shared.

Stacy has been teaching contemporary dance practices and performance courses in our program for many years now (whenever his schedule allows!). He will make another work for/with Lang Dance students in SPRING 2025. It will be an honor to introduce Stacy to a new cohort of Lang Dance students.
