🎓📚 Recent FLCC graduate Darien Hendrix is pictured here with Newark Campus Center Director Deborah Corsner at the Rural Schools Association of New York’s annual conference in Lake Placid, NY!
Through the WFL-BOCES P-TECH program, Darien completed his FLCC degree in May—before crossing the stage at his high school graduation from Mynderse Academy in June. 👏
Darien was selected as the student presenter at RSA’s The Future of Rural conference and received an enthusiastic response for his presentation:
🎤 “Earning Degrees Before Diplomas: Unlocking Early College Potential for Rural Students.”
In total, Darien earned over 90 college credits while still in high school and will now head to the University of Richmond. 🎉
When asked about FLCC students like Darien in the WFL BOCES P-TECH program, Corsner shared:
💬 “It’s an honor to watch young students like Darien and his classmates begin their journey at P-TECH, which is co-located at the FLCC Newark Campus. Students typically start with FLCC Gemini courses, move into in-person college classes at the Newark Campus, and eventually continue their degrees at other FLCC campuses or online study. Seeing the growth in these students as they progress through these stages is truly amazing.”
On Darien specifically, she added:
💬 “I’ve described Darien as the kind of student who only comes along a few times in an educator’s career. He took classes at the Newark Center, worked as a summer student aide under my supervision, and was actively involved in his home district of Seneca Falls, where I also serve as a school board member. It has been a pleasure getting to know him in all of those roles. I’m thrilled that conference attendees got to hear about his educational journey today- he did a fabulous job, and we are all very proud of him.”
