With all the concerns from recent hurricane Irma, another little considered issue is that hurricanes can be devastating to the tropical foliage industry. Guestimates are in the 50% loss range of tropical plant inventory to Irma. We are currently well stocked with plant inventory but I expect product may get harder to find and probably more expensive as we move forward over the next year. Our thoughts go out to those nurseries that were especially hard hit.

Philodendron or pothos? They look a lot alike but actually are not that closely related. Both are excellent house plants and relatively low light tolerant but the philodendron on the top suffers if the soil doesn't dry most of the way between waterings where the pothos on the bottom is much more fond of moister soil. When trimming, cut a few of the longest stems all the way back to within two or three leaves from the soil to encourage new growth to come from the top.

I bought this sweet little Venus Fly Trap as a gift for my wife who loved it! Who wouldn't? Look how cute it is. There is the old maxim that all plants are easy...in the right spot. These plants are full sun loving bog plants native to the the bogs of the coastal Carolinas. Our plant came from the local supermarket so to keep it from getting sun burn, we put it out in a dappled shade area and then gradually moved it to full beating sun on our deck over the next few weeks. They should not be fertilized since they get their own nutrients by catching insects in their traps and they cannot tolerate tap water due to the mineral content of things like calcium and iron, etc. So buy distilled water to supplement rain water when they are outside and never let the potting mix dry, you can even leave it sitting in water some of the time.

Sure, they are just ubiquitous Ficus trees.. but they really are pretty easy in good light and I have to admit they are just.. well PRETTY!

While these 20 plants have been studied for specific toxin uptake, it's certainly reasonable to assume that all plants take up various substances. No question that plants literally add life, warmth and beauty to an interior space and create a healthier environment.
