Whale hello there friends!

Friendly reminder that the Guin Library will be closed on Monday, September 7, 2026 for Labor Day.

We will reopen on Tuesday, September 8 at 8:00 AM.

Our regular hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Are you a student, intern, grad student, researcher, or agency partner at Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) looking for resources to support your learning, research, teaching, or coastal exploration? Look no further!

The Hatfield GearShare program is a new partnership by the Guin Library, iLab, Marine and Coastal Opportunities, and HMSC to bring visibility to HMSC's shared gear and provide a universal checkout system. Camera tripods, chest waders, binoculars, tidepooling kits, water quality meters, and more are available for checkout to members of the Hatfield community at no cost. Take advantage of these free resources for your work in the lab or field!

From our friends at OSU's Marine Mammal Institute, "Please join us as we celebrate the completion of the blue whale skeleton at on Thursday, July 16! is now home to one of only five fully assembled blue whale skeletons on display in the United States.

BLUE WHALE SKELETON CELEBRATION

While you’re here, pick up a clue-directed Quest to find the other whale bones around HMSC, and check out the marine mammal skeleton collection at the Visitor Center.

Then stay for an afternoon seminar featuring presentations about Marine Mammal Institute blue whale research by Drs. Bruce Mate, Dawn Barlow, and Kate Stafford. Remote attendance to the 3:30 pm seminar will be available via hmsc.oregonstate.edu/pastseminars.

When Pubah and Lazy LaRue move to a houseboat on an Oregon river, they find themselves immersed in a life filled with whimsical adventures. Even though their dwelling is ancient, tippy, and in need of endless repairs, their affection for it, for river life, and for one another does not wane. These linked stories teem with life and with love for their friends and for new neighbors—other houseboat people, ducks, beavers, muskrats, and all else the river has to offer. Lazy LaRue writes stories; Pubah is an apprentice electrician. Together, they create a world that encompasses the mundane and the fanciful—from lassoing logs and rewiring a river house to hot air balloons and dreams of saving the world.
