Welcome to College Transitions, a service for soon-to-graduate high school students with disabilities and their parents. ‘Transitions’ helps students and their parents understand and engage in the high school-to-college transition process, including:
* understanding the important differences between high school and college specialized and general support services;
* learning the different and critical roles that students, their parents and professionals each play;
* helping students become knowledgeable, confident and effective self-advocates;
* knowing what to look for in higher education settings and then making the best choice that meets students’ needs, desires and goals;
* working with students and parents throughout the first semester of college to ensure a positive and successful transition to college.
College Transitions is owned and operated by a former college PhD professor and college disability services administrator, with 35 years in the field. “Dr. Sue” is a warm and relaxed, but passionate advocate of college students with disabilities. She has presented at many national conferences and conducted workshops for parents and high school special educators and guidance counselors on transition issues for students with disabilities. Dr. Sue’s strength-based approach helps students learn to support themselves using their personal strengths; learn how and when to seek the external supports and accommodations they need/are entitled to; as well as supports parents as they also transition from being hands-on advocates and managers to being vital and critically important “guides from the side.”
The Transitions service works with students and their parents jointly as well as separately in either in-person or Zoom-based format. Families can opt for an per-session arrangement or register for a 10 or 15-session format (with unlimited calls and emails), designed to take the student through their first semester of college.
