Today, we honor Juneteenth, a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the enduring pursuit of equality. Juneteenth is not just a date on the calendar. It is a documented chapter of American history, grounded in historical records, research, and the lived experiences of generations of African Americans. As we reflect on the significance of June 19, 1865, we recognize the importance of remembering our full history and continuing the work of building a more just and equitable future.

Derrick Moore ’17 is currently starring in two productions at American Players Theatre, recipient of the 2026 Regional Theatre Tony Award, which was presented during a televised ceremony earlier this month. Moore is currently on stage starring as Orlando in William Shakespeare’s As You Like It and as Dontrell in Tyone Phillips’ Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea. He is a longstanding actor at the newly minted Tony Award winning theatre where in 2022 he starred as Oshoosi Size in The Brothers Size – the same play he appeared in as a student at NSU that earned the University its first national awards at The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and first festival appearance at the International Black Theatre Festival.

Moore graduated with a degree in Theatre Performance and was a mainstay in the NSU Theatre Company. “What has resonated with me most is the institution’s deep commitment to text, craft, and artistic development, values that strongly echo my training and experience at Norfolk State University,” Moore said about being a part of the artistic work that garnered the coveted, highest Broadway honor for a professional theatre company.

The Tony Awards include 26 categories for Broadway productions and performances, but only one is awarded annually to a regional theatre.
