Join us on Thursday, June 18 at 1pm at Michael and Kimthanh Lê Planetarium in partnership with the Virginia Zoo for a FREE, POP-UP double feature!

Come hang out with in partnership with the for a family friendly Pop-Up screening of Panda! Go, Panda!: The Rainy-Day Circus (1973) followed by Zarafa (2012). Films will be presented in English for all ages to enjoy.

In Panda Go Panda: The Rainy Day Circus, an early and lighthearted collaboration between future Studio Ghibli founders Hayao Miyazak and Isao Takahata, “Mimiko, Papa Panda, and Panny make friends with a baby tiger from the circus — just in time for a flash flood to throw the whole town into chaos.” -

Zarafa, a French-Belgian animated film directed by Rémi Bezançon and Jean-Christophe Lie is loosely based on the story of a female giraffe who lived in the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. A gift from Muhammad Ali of Egypt to King Charles X of France, she was one of three giraffes Muhammad Ali sent to European rulers in 1827. These were the first giraffes to be seen in Europe for over three centuries, since the Medici giraffe was sent to Lorenzo de' Medici in Florence in 1486. Because Zarafa depicts violence toward humans and animals in the first several minutes of the film (as part of an anti-slavery theme), a brief intermission will be offered between Panda Go Panda: Rainy Day Circus and Zarafa.

Join us at the Le Planetarium on the campus of ODU for this special Pride Month screening of Paris is Burning. This classic 1990 documentary of New York's ballroom culture received overwhelmingly positive reviews, but upon release engendered considerable controversy over the fact that many of the participants did not receive compensation.

Prior to the screening, a group of local panelists familiar with ball culture will discuss the film's legacy both as a landmark film and the surrounding controversy.

This screening is free and open to the public. Sponsored by Naro Video at ODU Libraries, Black Gay Pride, and the Virginia Q***r Film Festival.

Hourly parking is available in the 43rd and Elkhorn parking garage. The Planetarium is in the Chemistry building at 4501 Elkhorn Dr.

We hope you can join us today from 11-1 for our ice cream and cake social celebrating Perry Library's 50th!

As we mark the occasion, we're dropping another one of our impactful films from 1976 and the films they inspired or influenced. Frank Pierson's A Star is Born, itself a remake of the 1937 film, received mixed reviews but proved to be the 2nd highest grossing film of 1976, bringing in $80 million at the box office. The soundtrack, of course, was an international success, with even critical reviewers of the film praising Barbra Streisand's singing performance. #1976
