CROSSPLATFORM LECTURE with DR. DORI TUNSTALL
Decolonizing Design: Education for Liberatory Joy
April 15th, Wednesday
12:30 to 1:30pm
University Galleries
Join us as Dr. Dori Tunstall explores decolonizing design by challenging the European modernist myth of universality—such as the Bauhaus ideal—and instead advocates for a design education of liberatory joy, which strengthens the connections to self, community, and environment through making with the intention of collective care.
The lecture is free and open to the public. ........
Dr. Elizabeth “Dori” Tunstall is an award-winning design anthropologist and educator with over 25 years of experience leading institutional transformation across Australia, Canada, and the United States. Dori began her career as a high-tech user experience consultant at Sapient and Arc Worldwide before moving into academia at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she deepened the practice of transdisciplinary design research. As Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching at Swinburne University, she created the first Master of Design (Design Anthropology) program fully integrated with Indigenous ways of knowing. Later, as Dean of the Faculty of Design at OCAD University, Dori became the first Black—and Black female—dean of a faculty of design anywhere in the world. She led the globally recognized transformation of OCAD U's hiring practices and curriculum to become more diverse, decolonial, inclusive, and accessible. In 2023, she returned to the United States to found Dori Tunstall, Inc., working with communities and industries that are wanted to practice liberatory joy through research-informed care.........
