AAMU Set for Students to Return to Campus for Spring 2021 Semester

January is an exciting time for the AAMU campus, as it prepares for students to return after an extended Holiday Recess.

Faculty and staff remotely returned to work Monday. COVID-19 testing began Tuesday and continues through Thursday.

AAMU Receives $500K Grant from Alabama Power

Alabama A&M University (AAMU) has received a $500,000 grant from Alabama Power and its parent, Southern Company, to help bolster its technological capabilities across the campus. The gift is part of Southern Company and its subsidiaries’ $50 million HBCU Initiative, a multiyear funding strategy announced in January 2020 that provides HBCU students with scholarships, internships, leadership development and access to technology and innovation to support career readiness.

“We are very pleased to receive this generous grant from Alabama Power and Southern Company,” said Dr. Andrew Hugine, Jr., president of AAMU. “During these challenging times, especially with the coronavirus pandemic having changed the way we serve our students, this grant will help us improve our technology capabilities and continue to innovate to meet the needs of the current and future students of Alabama A&M University.”

The funds awarded to Alabama A&M will be used to support an extended reality lab that combines both augmented and virtual reality; visual collaboration classrooms that feature multi-touch, multi-user software; and, cloud virtual desktops. The University noted that this gift will immediately impact its nearly 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

“Alabama A&M appreciates the long-standing partnership with Alabama Power and Southern Company. This gift will bring exciting and cutting-edge technologies that build upon the investments already made across the campus,” said Archie Tucker, II, vice president for marketing, communication and advancement.

Alabama Power and Southern Company are honored to be part of a growing group of corporate and philanthropic partners that have increased support for HBCUs in the wake of COVID-19 and mounting calls for racial justice. Both businesses believe deeply in the importance of HBCUs in higher education and in their impact on economic development, innovation and American life.

AAMU Students Win Big in NFL’s HBCU Battle of the Brains 2020

Six AAMU students won a $5,000 grant for placing third in the 2020 HBCU Battle of the Brains. The National Football League sponsors the competition, which took place November 4 – 7.

AAMU also won an additional $7,500 grant from Dell Technologies for producing the Highest Scoring Business Deliverables.

The HBCU Battle of the Brains is a cross-discipline competition where student teams from HBCUs across the country develop a solution to a complex issue, then pitch that solution in front of judges and a live audience. It normally takes place at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, but was held virtually this year.

AAMU Announces Fall Commencement and Guidelines

AAMU officials have announced a December 11, 2020, Fall Commencement Ceremony to celebrate the institution’s approximately 347 fall 2020 graduates. The ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. in Louis Crews Stadium.

Face coverings and social distancing will be required for all graduates, along with flat or athletic shoes to walk on the artificial turf. Face coverings and social distancing will also be required for families and guests. Graduates will receive electronic tickets for their guests.

The Fall 2020 Commencement may be cancelled at any time, depending on Center for Disease Control, state and local health recommendations.
