Super excited about the new grads in Visual Culture! One of them is Tunde Okoli, from Lagos, Nigeria. He's here to research Nollywood (the Nigerian video industry).

The School of Art is excited to welcome Tunde Okoli to the School of Art! Tunde, who joins us as a graduate student in Visual Culture, is from Lagos, Nigeria where his wife and three children still live. Tunde earned an undergraduate degree in Film and Media Studies from the University of Calabar in 1996 and since that time has been working in journalism and public relations.

THE MA PROGRAM IN VISUAL CULTURE AT ILLINOIS STATE UNIVERSITY INVITES APPLICATIONS FOR FALL 2016.

FUNDING AND TUITION WAVERS AVAILABLE.

APPLICATION DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 1, 2016.

Illinois State University’s MA Program in Visual Culture is a small and selective program housed in a large and diverse School of Art that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in studio art and art education, and an undergraduate major and minor in art history. We provide funding for all admitted graduate students (full tuition waivers and funded assistantships).

The Visual Culture Program provides a rigorous foundation in a range of critical, cultural and visual theories and methodologies. Our graduates go on to complete PhDs or pursue art-related careers such as museum and gallery work. We foster an intimate graduate enrollment so that Visual Culture faculty may work closely with students in independent studies and thesis projects. In addition to three core Visual Culture Seminars and several art history courses, students take courses outside the School of Art. Visual Culture research is necessarily interdisciplinary, and the Program has affiliated faculty in English, History, Political Science, Anthropology, Theatre and Film Studies, Foreign Languages, Communications, Sociology and more.

Students work as graduate assistants, helping faculty in the School of Art with courses. Students have also worked elsewhere on campus, particularly in the university library, working on projects such as exhibitions and special collections projects. We also have a University Galleries that has just moved into a new building, and is well known for its innovative exhibitions and other programs. Graduate students have worked with the curatorial staff on various projects as well.

Illinois State University is located in Normal, IL, two hours south of Chicago (the Amtrak station is adjacent to the campus and students frequently take advantage of the $12 train ticket to spend a day visiting museums and galleries in Chicago).

For further information and applications, please contact Dr. Melissa Johnson ([email protected]) and visit our website: http://finearts.illinoisstate.edu/art/graduate/visual_culture/

ME is an exhibition of self-expressions recorded in a variety of media created by regional women artists. A self-portrait expresses an artist's identity whether it is a true likeness or a representation of who she is, what she values about herself. It depends on how she sees herself – or how she wants to be seen. Self-portraits are visual autobiographies.

Eligibility
Women artists and art students (18 and older) within forty-five miles of Peoria are invited to participate. Please submit one or two images of your work for consideration. A variety of media will be considered (including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics, collage, mixed media, textile).

Requirements
All work must be presented in a professional manner.
Works must be no larger than 18 x 18 inches in any direction, including framing and hanging materials. For 2D work, weight limit is 10 lbs. For 3D work, base up to 12 inches; height to 30 inches.
All work must arrive ready to hang or display. Works that do not require framing should be properly protected for shipping and handling. Framed works must be wired, and ready to hang. No sawtooth hangers.

Online Exhibition
All works selected for the gallery exhibition will also be included in an online exhibition.
