OU Department of Biology

OU Department of Biology The Department of Biology is committed to excellence in teaching and research in all areas of biology. It's an exciting time to be a biologist!

Our understanding of how animals and plants function and interact has grown explosively in recent years. New biological insights flood the media and influence everything from medical care to global politics. We in the OU Biology Department address major biological questions through our research: How are memories stored in the brain? What factors influence mate choice? How do embryonic cells acquir

e specialized functions? How does speciation occur? We study molecules, cells, organisms, and ecosystems to uncover mechanisms of physiology, development, behavior, and evolution. The breadth and strength of our research fosters an integrative approach to biology. Our mission is to promote excellence in undergraduate and graduate education and research. The Department of Biology attracts excellent graduate students, and we are proud of our record of training professional scientists. Come learn about biology with us!

Oooohhh, shiny new toys courtesy of the 3D peeps at The University of Oklahoma Libraries. Each bone of the skull has been printed a different color. Bones are attached by magnets so you can break it down and reassemble it. Think you can do it? It's not easy!

The OU Biology Department's next speaker for General Seminar is going to be Professor Kasic from California State University in Sacramento. She is trained as a biologist and moved into film making later in her career. She has worked on many successful projects and most recently released a movie on an NSF funded project to study a freshwater lake under the Antarctic Ice. Her visit is co-sponsored by the Department of Film and Media Studies (https://www.ou.edu/cas/fms ) and Environmental Studies (https://www.ou.edu/cas/environmentalstudies).
Professor Kasic is a brilliant example for a career outside of academia and her last film project demonstrates an elegant Broader Impact created for NSF.
In addition to giving a General Seminar she will be present for a screening of her film on Thursday March 9th, 7pm in the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation Auditorium, Ga***rd College Room 1140: The Lake at the Bottom of the World (Kathy Kasic, 2022). Here is a link to a preview: https://vimeo.com/790627784
