If you are planning to attend the on-line Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) workshop you will need to first make an account on the CIRTL website. You can create one by going here: https://www.cirtl.net/users/sign_up/account. During this process, there is a pull-down list of Institutions. If your Institution is not listed, you can still create an account by selecting "Other" and then writing your Institution into the form.

Once you create an account, you should receive an email to confirm it. Click and follow the link in the email. You can then sign into the website, go to the event page (https://www.cirtl.net/events/536), and click 'Register to Attend'. The workshop is set up to automatically approve anyone who registers, so once you follow those steps you should be set!

If anyone experiences a problem with registration, please email [email protected]

One way to benefit society is by being able to write your science in a way that is accessible for the public! That is exactly what IBEST, Dr. Detamore, and Dr. Eodice are helping others do. They brought Dr. Skibba, a science writer and freelance journalist to OU to conduct a science writing for the public workshop!

Here is a great example, provided below by Tom Wavering, Executive Director of the OU Tom Love Innovation Hub, when organizations and individuals decide to have a broader impact (meaning to benefit society)!

So why is there a Tom Love Innovation Hub? To make a sweet coffee table? To immerse yourself in swinging virtual light-sabers to music? To provide a cool collaboration space with multi-color lighting for group projects? Yes to all of these - but even more! The mission of the Tom Love Innovation Hub is to grow innovation and entrepreneurship across the students, faculty and staff at OU and across our community. A great example of this is University of Oklahoma Gallogly College of Engineering, https://www.facebook.com/ENGINEERINGatOU/, student Sarah Ciccaglione who used the I-Hub to meet partners, bounce ideas, build prototypes, and get advice. This morning she signed her first patent application and will be back at the I-Hub this fall continuing to build her business. Are you going to be next? Stay tuned for more stories from the I-Hub and some exciting announcements about new programs we're planning for this Fall and beyond!

Happy Memorial Day! Here at the University of Oklahoma (OU) individuals strive to help and empower others and benefit society! The Broader Impacts in Research (BIR) organization also follows this mantra. One way that we help benefit faculty and the nation is to provide an evidence and research-based approach to understanding and dealing with broader impacts. Click the link below to read more about how this is being done, https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/moving-towards-research-based-understanding-approach-broader-michael/.

Benefiting society is at the heart of what many of us do at the University of Oklahoma! We are excited to announce that Dr. Marilyn Korhonen is the new Interim Director of the Center for Applied Research and Development (CARD) in the Office of Vice President for Research (OVPR). Marilyn has benefited many throughout the campus in her position as Associate Director of the Center for Program Development and Enrichment (CRPDE). In her new position we look forward to having her work to benefit the OU and the greater community by: identifying and developing opportunities to focus the University’s expertise toward translation of knowledge and discoveries into workable solutions to specific problems; working within and beyond the University to strategically align OU’s research capacities with societal needs, business challenges, and the missions of governmental agencies; and working directly with colleges, departments, and scholars to support their efforts to apply knowledge, address challenges, discover solutions, and create products.

There are so many ways to benefit society through what you do! Dr. Kyungwon Koh, Assistant Professor in the School of Library and Information Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) does this in several ways. Two of these ways are by helping K-12 students learn and advance innovative practices in school libraries. This year Kyungwon has been featured in the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded STEM for All Video Showcase for federally funded projects in collaboration between the University of Oklahoma (OU) and the Norman Public Schools (NPS). At the University of Oklahoma's (OU's) Year of the Scientific Writer event hosted by the Writing Center, Dr. Melanie Harrison Okoro helped faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students figure out ways to communicate their science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) using the Sci-COMM Ecosystem model.
