A warm welcome to all returning student "fans" and to any new students who may stumble upon our Cate FIR webpage! As most of you know, we completed our term as "FIRs" = three remarkable and memorable years -- as of this past 2013 summer -- where has it gone?! And now you can welcome new Cate FIRs, History Prof. Dr. Bala Saho, his wife Binta, and their three children. We know that you will love them, and you are no doubt in store for some special cultural awareness FIR events.

We have moved to a home at 2130 Dakota St., and we welcome visitors because it is soooo quiet here! You can always contact us via email as our addresses are in the global OU/OUHSC Outlook system. We will miss you all terribly, but know that Allen still offices in Cate 4 so you will see him around campus and esp. in the Cate Main food court. Barbara's orientation is toward OKC and the cancer center, but she will definitely make it over to campus for OU games, arts and other special events. And we both may be lightly involved with some Honors programming.

Stay tuned for a few additional posts of photos as we try to catch up on those past photo posts before we finally sign off and close down this webpage. We don't want to confuse new students since your new Cate FIRs may want to establish a Cate FIR Facebook webpage too!

"Soldiers in Our Midst" was a Cate FIR event in February that featured fellow undergrads sharing personal stories of deployment and their transition from war to the university as OU students -- in their own words and photos. It has always seemed that vets on campus were largely invisible to the wider student body, yet these are students with both wise and sober perspectives to offer. We thank every vet, ROTC, and supportive student who participated in this very special evening, especially the OU Student Veterans Association - our co-sponsors, Chasity and Stephen Cooper (Navy), Gabe Seveigny (Army), Wesley Causey (Navy), and our moderator Political Science Professor Shad Satterwaite, himself a officer in the Army Reserves who has been deployed twice to Afghanistan.

One of our annual Cate FIR events where we feature a host of OU academic support programs in a racetrack layout, and after visiting with several programs, every participant received a winner's cup of gelato!! Featured programs included the Writing Center, IC Action Tutoring, SSS Success Series, OU CARES, UC Assessment Center, UC Advising, Undergraduate Research, Education Abroad, Honors Reading Groups, and OU Libraries.

Sweet Java Study Nights have been among our regular favorite FIR events. It's been amazing to see how many of you could pile into our little apartment and equally amazing how many cookies you could consume in these monthly events! We started out with an everyone-get-into-the-baking-act night with all kinds of Halloween decorating and wrapped up the fall semester with massages and holiday treats (amidst our decorations!). In January a great group came by early for the State of the Union message from President Obama. We had monthly Java Nights until May when we had to make our good-byes, hugs and all!

Dear student friends of the Cate FIRs,
We still have 2-3 free tickets for tomorrow night's (Thurs) musical, "On the Town," and we'd love to have you join us. Just send an email to [email protected] if you are interested. We'll meet at 7 pm at the Cate FIR Apt. for food and mocktails, then walk to the theater in Holmberg Hall. You'll get to meet the incoming FIRs too!!!

Greetings everyone! We have just posted our last BIG event (A FIR Farewell), but we want you to know that we also are cosponsoring a Poetry Slam event on this coming Wednesday the 24th at OMU and a kite-flying picnic on this next Thursday the 25th in the Cate Center Rock Garden. Plus we are hosting a Nights Out at "On the Town" musical on May 2nd, and a final Sweet Java Study Night on Sunday, May 5th, 8-11 pm. Watch for the event postings and the flyers around Cate. If we can't catch up with you this Sunday, perhaps you can drop by for the picnic or Java Night? Allen & Barbara
