by Bryce Barnett A Film and Media Studies major from Ft. Worth, Texas, Bryce Barnett wrote this essay for Catherine Mintler's "Doppelgängers and Doubles" class. In a 1972 episode of The Dick Cavett Show (a popular daytime program that ran from 1968 to 1995), Cavett began his interview with Alfred Hitchcock with a reference to the director’s iconic taste for the macabre, asking “How did you acquire this turn of mind?” “I think my mother scared me when I was three months old,” Hitchcock begins, pausing while the audience laughs before he continues, “You see, she said, ‘BOO!’ It gave me the hiccups....

by Tristan Breath An Advertising major from Norman, Oklahoma, Tristan Breath wrote this essay for Timothy Bradford's "From Spirituals to Hip-Hop" class. When my friends and I need to hype ourselves up, we always put on a Megan Thee Stallion song. “Cash S**t” was the go-to for a while, but “Cocky Af” and “Savage” are also constantly in rotation. When you sing lyrics like “Everything about me poppin, Got face, got body, you name it I got it,” it’s hard to feel anything but confidence....

by Morgan Chen An International Studies and Math major with a minor in French, Morgan Chen wrote this essay for Catherine Mintler's "Myth of the American Dream" class. The United States: a beacon of wealth and opportunity that shines throughout the world. At least, it portrays itself that way. The poem inscribed on the Statue of Liberty famously declares, “‘Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, / I lift my lamp beside the golden door!’” (Lazarus 13-14)....

by Adeline Miller An Environmental Sustainability major from Trophy Club, Texas whose passion is environmental justice, Adeline Miller wrote this essay for Timothy Bradford's "Humans, Nature: Fragile Future" class. I first learned about the Ogallala Aquifer junior year of high school in my environmental science course. We explored how vast the aquifer was and how vital it was to life in the middle of the United States and ultimately the entirety of the country....

by Rachel Emery A Meteorology major and a GIS minor from Glenarm, Illinois, Rachel Emery wrote this essay for Catherine Mintler's "Doppelgängers and Doubles" class. Have you ever wished Sigmund Freud was still alive so you could finally make clear your dislike for him and your disagreements with his outdated, problematic scientific ideas? Although not the same as bringing him back to life, his new form as a modern Voodoo doll gives you a chance to tell him how you really feel, and even stick a few pins in him....

Neither the Edith Kinney Ga***rd Expository Writing Program nor this fourteenth issue of our student literary publication would exist without the contributions of so many excellent undergraduate writers. The primary credit for Volume XIV of Brainstorm belongs to the students whose work we showcase this year: Bryce Barnett, Tristan Breath, Morgan Chen, Rachel Emery, and Adeline Miller. Each of the essays by these young writers reveals a distinctive voice, argument, and vision; we are proud to share them with the greater OU community....
