Middle Eel River Watershed Initiative - Water Technicians

Middle Eel River Watershed Initiative - Water Technicians Middle Eel River Watershed Initiative is a four year study funded by a 319 Nonpoint Source Pollution Grant.

This study focuses on a 30 mile stretch of the Eel River between North Manchester, Indiana and Mexico, Indiana. During the course of this study the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of the Eel River and six of it tributaries are studied to help determine the water quality within the study area. The data collected is used to write a Watershed Management Plan and to develop cost-sha

re programs with land-owners to provide financial assistance for implementing best management practices on their property.

Today we went out in the field with the smallmouth bass guys and helped sample fish for their project between the Market Street bridge and the dam here in North Manchester. We used the backpack shocker (pictured here with Sean) to capture more of the non-game species, such as minnows and darters, and the boat shocker to capture more of the larger game species.

This week is going to be a "catch up" week for us. We will be working on entering the water chemistry data from May and June and a small backlog that developed after we ran out of phosphorus tests last week. We will still have one grab sample run and do some microbial testing, but besides that it will a pretty easy week ahead of us! :)

Today marked the last day of daily water collection and water analysis. For the month July we will still be sampling, but only once a week. We will now phase into the more biological side of the study by looking at the fish communities and aquatic habitats at each of your sites!

Today we completed our backlog of samples! At the start of the summer we were 300+ samples behind, the cold room in the biology department had almost no room left in it, and we thought that there was no way we would ever catch up. But as of today, we have successfully ran all samples that have been collected since beginning of May. It was a very joyous day for ALL that are involved in this project!!

Yesterday we traveled to the big city of Chicago to visit the Manchester College students working on the Redside Dace research project at the Pritzker DNA Lab located in the Field Museum. This little field trip was a great break from the large amount of water chemistry we are preforming daily on the backlog that has developed over this very rainy beginning to our field season!!! :)
