It's a good thing educators know how to recognize a teachable moment-- those unexpected events that open up conversations and can expand understanding. We've had more than our share of teachable moments these past few weeks, and people are talking about education in new ways, with more curiosity, some uncertainty, and a better idea of the problems our schools face as they make educating large groups of children seem easy, manageable, and fluid. Positive, negative, and neutral, modern learning is on display.
Right now, we've all got to make it past the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic. After, we will have a unique opportunity to discuss what works in education... and what could use some tweaking. We will better know our children as learners, and as students. We will better know what teachers juggle when they plan a unit, an assessment, or a set of assignments. We will better grasp the complexities school administrators manage on a daily, monthly, and yearly basis.
This is an unprecedented teachable moment. Pay attention. Take notes. Be ready to engage with your school, your school board, your politicians. Educators are ready for this conversation. Are you ready to join us?
