Heritage School of Midwifery Heritage School of Midwifery is dedicated to passing on our rich midwifery heritage to the next generation of midwives.

Heritage School of Midwifery was birthed from the hearts of many people and midwives who saw a need for southwest Florida to have a midwifery school to train highly skilled Licensed Midwives of excellence. Kristin Schuchmann, HSM’s Founder and Executive Director, saw this need as she trained to be a Florida Licensed Midwife. Kristin founded an international distance education school without walls

for birth professionals in 2003. It has trained doulas, childbirth educators, and lactation consultants for over a decade. In 2007, a midwifery course was added to bring midwifery training into the homes of underserved populations. Dozens of birth professionals have been trained and continue to practice in the United States and many other countries around the globe because of the unique form of education. When Kristin moved to Florida in 2007, she discovered that Florida has some special requirements for midwives to have the ability to practice, including 3 years of in-classroom training. She traveled many hours to complete the required classroom time to become a FL Licensed Midwife. Kristin’s school met the needs of students who required a distance education program, but another option was needed for the future midwives of Florida. A dream to have a brick and mortar midwifery school in southwest Florida was born. Heritage School of Midwifery shares Kristin’s passion for improving maternity outcomes all over the world and it is starting with bringing midwifery training to our own ‘neighborhood’ in southwest Florida. The first class of the Heritage School of Midwifery began in September of 2017. Graduates of HSM are eligible to become Florida Licensed Midwives and Certified Professional Midwives after completing all the requirements and testing with the North American Registry of Midwives. Its extensive network of families and birth professionals are a great support for HSM and all future students and midwives that will improve maternity care in Florida.

With over seven years of experience serving families across North Florida, Abby is passionate about home birth, midwifery, and expanding access to out-of-hospital birth options. A proud Florida native and University of Florida graduate, she has also been a dedicated advocate for midwifery and legislative efforts supporting the profession since beginning her journey.

✨ Meet Jordan Hall, LM! ✨

A graduate of the Florida School of Traditional Midwifery, Jordan has deep roots in Florida’s East Coast birth community. She has been supporting families for over 8 years and became a Licensed Midwife in 2023.

With a background in childcare, doula care, emergency response, and hospital care, Jordan is passionate about supporting autonomy through education, compassionate care, and respect for the physiology of birth. 💛

Outside of midwifery, she enjoys camping, foraging, wildcrafting, herbalism, and placenta encapsulation. 🌿

We’re so excited to have Jordan sharing her knowledge and helping educate the next generation of midwives! 🩷

📢 Jacksonville Program Update!

We have an important update for our Jacksonville community! 💙

Jacksonville Community Midwives will remain a valued preceptor site for Heritage School of Midwifery students. However, it will no longer serve as an off-campus Skill Intensive site for our program.

But don’t worry—we’re not going anywhere! 👀✨

We are currently working on plans for a new Jacksonville campus Skill Intensive site, and we’ll be announcing the new location soon!

Stay tuned and keep an eye on our social media for updates. We can’t wait to share what’s next! 🩺🌿

🌿 We're Growing — Join Our Faculty! 🌿

Heritage School of Midwifery & Natural Health Sciences is expanding our adjunct faculty team! We're hiring Adjunct Instructors for Midwifery Skills and Labor Support in Lakeland, Jacksonville, North Port, and Port St. Lucie — plus a remote, asynchronous instructor for WEL 103: Alternative Modalities.

Faculty Qualifications:
✔️ Current Florida licensure as an MD, DO, APRN, RN, CPM, LM, or CNM with at least 3 years of relevant clinical experience
✔️ Terminal health-related doctoral degree preferred (DAOM, ND, MD, DO, DNP, or equivalent)
✔️ For non-midwifery courses: at least 3 years of relevant experience, or a bachelor's degree or higher if no directly related field of experience exists

Faculty qualifications are determined by program and course level, consistent with ABHES, CIE, and institutional best practices for our Certificate in Maternal Health Medical Assisting and 3-Year Direct Entry Midwifery programs.

We're also seeking a detail-oriented, discreet, and highly organized Executive Assistant to support our Executive Director in North Port, FL.
