In their proposed budget for 2026/27, the Labor Party has proposed shutting down a program that has helped us buy Norwegian books and films, as well as invite some really exciting guests from Norway. If you are a current or former Norwegian student, please consider signing this petition asking them to save the program! Be sure to comment that you learned Norwegian at a college in North America.

Reminder: Don’t miss NAHA’s Centennial Exhibit, on display now in the Groot Gallery at St. Olaf College’s Center for Art and Dance. Open through August 9!

Marking 100 years since NAHA’s founding in 1925, this exhibit draws from the association’s rich archival collections to reflect on two centuries of movement, memory, and meaning. From handwritten letters to historic photographs, each item offers a powerful glimpse into the lives, struggles, and dreams of Norwegian Americans.

The Norwegian Department was fortunate to have had the opportunity to host, together with the Norwegian-American Historical Association, the Crossings and Connections: Norwegian Migration to North America Conference. We would like to share a few pics and a snippet of the closing remarks by Conference Chair, Kari Lie Dorer:

"Crossings and Connections has underscored the crucial importance of diverse voices challenging us to look beyond single narratives and embrace the complex, sometimes uncomfortable, but ultimately enriching mosaic of our shared past. As you depart, I encourage you to carry forward the spirit of inquiry and empathy ignited here. Let the stories of crossings and the new connections we’ve made continue to inform our understanding of migration, identity, and the ongoing human journey.... Thank you to our 91 phenomenal speakers, our 16 generous sponsors and most importantly, to each and every one of the [275!] participants for your thoughtful engagement."

Pictured are the participants who posed for our commemorative photo and our final keynote speaker, Hisham Zaman who underscored the profound role of visual storytelling in validating the universal human experience of seeking a place to call home.

For additional pictures visit the Norwegian American Historical Association's page. Thank you to Photographer Evan Pak for capturing these memories.

Have you become interested in learning more about Norwegians in America? We highly recommend the new podcast series Amerikafeber in Norwegian available for free here: https://www.norgeshistorie.no/podkast/

For those who are not familiar with this website, in 2014 the University of Oslo presented the Minister of Education and Research with a very special Constitutional Bicentennial gift to the Norwegian people: the website Norgeshistorie.no, an open-access collection of several hundred short, popularized articles on Norwegian history, written and peer-reviewed by academic historians from all over Norway. In the ten years following the launch, Norgeshistorie.no has branched out into another medium by producing a string of podcast series on various topics of Norwegian history, all broadcast by NRK, the Norwegian public broadcaster. The topic for the most recent podcast series—debuting this summer—is Norwegian migration to the United States. Although only accessible to readers and listeners proficient in Norwegian, the articles and the podcasts are a goldmine for everyone interested in Norwegian history, as well as the history of the migration.

En forskningsbasert historiepodkast laget av Universitetet i Oslo. Programmene sendes på NRK P2.
