Lighting Project proposal was approved for funding!
Carleton will save $17,500 and 155 tons of carbon dioxide emissions PER YEAR (!!!) with the installation of motion detectors in bathrooms and stairwells across campus for energy conservation. Maintenance and facilities will install them this summer.
Energy club members helped get the project approved for funding by determining how much money and energy, each new motion detector would save the college. This required running around campus and determining the wattage of every stair/bathroom light bulb on campus! [See funny bathroom pictures]
The cost of all the new detectors ($66,000) is fronted by the Sustainability Revolving Fund. That's a lot of money, but because these detectors save $17,000 a year, they will pay for themselves in only 4 years!
We are very proud of the success of this project.
Big thanks to Martha Larson, Maintenance and Facilities (Mitch Miller, Brian Lee), Sustainability Assistants (Jenna Greene Jackie Dowling), members of Arjendu Pattanayak's physics class (Sustainable Energy Principles and Practice) Madeline Chosy Lisa Au, and most importantly Energy Club volunteers and leaders!
