We've made St. Olaf news. Yay! Check out one of the equity and inclusion efforts MSCS Faculty and Academic Support have undertaken together. We love all our MSCS students and alumni.

As part of our series highlighting To Include is To Excel projects, one team of faculty and staff members share the work they did to support students in a calculus course that is a gateway for many…

Hey Ole MSCS Community! It's been a long time since we communicated, but we just want to check in and see how everyone is doing. Our MSCS courses are up and running and have had two successful (fully online) days of class so far. Our students are eager to be back and are happy to see them. We are also welcoming some of our own alumni as new faculty to the department: Laura Boehm Vock '08 joins our statistics and data science program as a new tenure-track faculty member and Adam Wood '16 returns as a visiting professor in the mathematics program. Have a great year, everyone, and let us know how you're all doing!

It's been a great summer, and in about a week we look forward to welcoming just over 800 new students to campus. Our math, stats, and CS courses are just about ready to go and we're excited to start another year! What have you all been up to?

Congratulations to the Class of 2017 - commencement is Sunday! Quiz time! What is the total sum of the number of mathematics majors, computer science majors, and statistics concentrators in the Class of 2017 (double majors count twice!)? First person to guess exactly wins a special MSCS prize, which we will mail to you! If you have insider knowledge of the answer, you're not eligible :)

The following statement was sent to all students taking a mathematics, statistics, or computer science course. It was also read and discussed in many of our courses on Friday.

In one week, 19 Oles leave for Interim in Budapest. Follow the link below to see them blog about all their Hungarian and number theoretic adventures with Professor Berliner. The first post should appear no later than Jan. 4.

Does there exist an integer of 2016 decimal digits, each digit of which is 6 or 7, which is divisible by 2^2016?

This question and nine others were part of the MAA North Central Section Team contest, held on Nov. 12. Teams of three from colleges and universities throughout MN, SD, ND, and Manitoba competed.

Congratulations to the St. Olaf team of Jakob Hofstad and Eric Anderlik (two first-years!) for WINNING this year. St. Olaf last won this contest in 2008.

Teams of up to three undergraduate students work collaboratively at their home campuses on the ten problems, under the supervision of local faculty members. You are allowed to enter as many teams as you wish. Keep in mind that many students who might score zero on the Putnam can profitably participa...
