Scenes from the first-ever Popup Poetry Reading in the Soule Space (the English Dept. lounge) on Second Laird today.

The Irish poet Luke Morgan, fresh off a visit to Greg Hewett’s creative writing class, read several poems from his three collections of verse.

We hope to make these informal readings a regular thing, so stay tuned…

Wet grass and damp weather pushed the annual dept. picnic indoors to Evans Lounge this evening and may have created a new tradition in the process. After the consumption of burgers and hotdogs (and sundry side dishes), the Seniors took on the World not in the usual game of softball but in a stirring contest of foosball.

The World rotated in students, faculty and even President Byerly but eventually succumbed to the Seniors, who displayed the grit and flair that took them through comps, and some darker—some might say, disturbing—qualities that gave them an edge. The World, meanwhile, was a paragon of gentility, generosity and genuine sportsmanship. While we await Mike Kowalewski’s write-up, here are a few photographs of the tilt.

Disturbing.

George “Shuffdawg” Shuffelton welcomes the newest denizen of Second Laird. She clearly seems happier next to Edgar Allan Poe in the Soule Space (the department lounge) where they (Zadie and Ed, not George) will spend most of their time.

Who photographs the photographer?

George “Shuffdawg” Shuffelton is seen here last month, photographing many of the new crop of English majors in front of a cake bearing images of their faces, which we then proceeded to eat as part of a long-established department tradition that is not creepy in the slightest.

Seven years ago today after afternoon tea on the London Program. I think the hotel we ate it at may have been a money-laundering operation but we enjoyed ourselves. And took a proper Bollywood-style family photograph afterwards.

Scenes from the party last afternoon to welcome the latest crop of English majors to Second Laird. Highlights included zooming with new majors currently on the London program, food from Desi Diner, stirring words from our chair, George Shuffelton, a game of Jeopardy hosted by Kira Farmer (‘24) and, of course, face cake. Also pictured: Greg Smith, whose last new majors shindig this was.

Anyone want to guess what Alexandra Petri’s major was?

British literature tells us we cannot rule out that Kate Middleton is wuthering on a height.
