Norwich University Ranger Company

Norwich University Ranger Company NURC purpose is to further develop Army cadets in leadership skills, Army tactics and doctrine, and in physical fitness.

The organization provides a realistic and tactical environment to test and develop dedicated individuals to master these fields. The origins of the Norwich University Ranger Company reach far back to the 1950's when it was founded as the Ranger Platoon. The organization's purpose was to further developed Army cadets in leadership skills, Army tactics and doctrine, and in physical fitness. The orga

nization provided a realistic and tactical environment to test and developed these dedicated individuals in every one of these fields
Since then the small organization grew to a company size unit that works hand in hand with Army ROTC Cadre to keep providing these training opportunities for Army Cadets that desire the additional development. The Company is divided into three sections. The first section is the Ranger Candidates who throughout the year are being trained for the culminating event of Cat Eye Weekend, the second section is the Norwich Ranger Instructors aka. Cat Eyes who take part in the training of the new candidate class and further instructor training. The third and final section is the Challenge Teams who are compiled Cat Eyes and a few other cadets who are in excellent states of fitness in the Army ROTC Department. The company trains regularly twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Squad Styx, patrolling, battle drills, and weapons familiarization are a few things that the company will train on during our two or three hour sessions.

Indoc. The first two weeks of selection. The first gateway to pass on the long path towards admittance into the Company. Candidates who make it past Indoc have proved that they are mentally and physically prepared to take on the challenges of the next 8 weeks and TAB Weekend. There is still a lot of work to get done. It’s simple, not easy.

Norwich Ranger Company has been putting in a lot of solid work in 2022-2023.

We Started in the Fall conducting our Demo day, RIP Process, and Arctic Sage. We began with 65 candidates and 12 cadets earned their Norwich Ranger tab. Our instructor staff did an amazing job instructing and developing candidates.

Second year Cadets learned advanced skills in camouflaging and concealment and conducted a joint FTX with Norwich Artillery Battery (Arctic Sage). Cadets refined skills in patrolling, planning, and battle drills.

In October, 6 Ranger Company cadets competed in the Ranger Challenge competition at Fort Knox against all other Senior Military Colleges. Through their training at Ranger Company they were able to thrive in competition.

In December, Senior Cadets received their branches. All commissioning Army Cadets received their first choice in branching. It is a testament to their hard work and continued development.

Phase II training began in January with an emphasis on patrolling at the squad level, battle drills, and military mountaineering.

We culminated our squad portion of training with our annual winter FTX. Cadets were assessed in their proficiency to conduct operations in a strenuous environment to include extreme cold weather, complex terrain, and little food and sleep.

As we look forward to the end of the year, cadets are refining platoon level tasks in preparation for Cat Eye weekend in April.

Norwich University Ranger Company had an excellent Fall Semester.

The Company started the semester strong with our annual Military Skills Demonstration Day, in which Cat Eyes demonstrated to the incoming Rook Class a taste of what it means to be a Norwich Ranger.

Ranger Indoctrination started in early September with almost 60 candidates. After a grueling 10 weeks of training, testing and preparation, 9 Cadets earned the title Norwich Ranger on TAB Weekend in early November.

Later that month, Second Year Cat Eyes conducted a Joint FTX with the Norwich Artillery Battery and other cadets from the campus in “Arctic Sage 2021”, which tested the physical and mental capabilities of our Cat Eyes, as well as their ability to instruct other cadets in Infantry Tactics, while strengthening relations between different Specialty Units on campus. The weekend was a massive success on all ends.

In December, our Senior Cat Eyes commissioning into the US Army recieved their branches. Every member of Ranger Company branched in their top 3 choices, with the majority branching in their first choice. Their success is a testimony to both their individual success, and the impact of the Cat Eyes before them.

As we look forward towards our Winter FTX and Cat Eye Weekend, we are both grateful and eager that we are able to train to the Ranger Standard.

Ranger Company continues to rely on donations from alumni, friends and family to fund our training and end of the year Dining In. We thank you all for your continued support, and ask that you consider donating to support future training events.

Ranger Company has been adapting due to the constantly changing circumstances. This past fall we welcomed 12 new members into the Company on a Tab Weekend with relatively nice weather. Although the weather was nicer, the same evolutions and "suck factor" were endured by the candidates.

We would also like to recognize our Seniors. This past December they received their branches into the US Army. Names and branches are in order of left to right, back to front on the first image.

Hope everyone is doing well this winter. We just wanted to share some updates of the things members have been doing this past summer break and winter break. It has been a tough semester because of the restrictions we have, but we are always making the best of it. Here are some Cadets we have that completed some exceptional training recently.

Cadet Hsu (center) attended Republic of China Army’s CTLT program at 333rd Mechanized Infantry Brigade in Taiwan during the summer break.

CDT Chin (seated row center) attended Republic of China Army’s Basic Assault Course at Special Warfare Training Center (SWTC) in Taiwan during the summer break

Army Cadets Sullenger (left) and Clayburgh (right) completed Air Assault school over the winter.
