Nora Vosburg, PhD, Assistant Professor of German at St. Olaf College, will share “Low German, High German, and the Shift Toward English: Kansas Mennonites and What They Can Tell Us About a Changing Culture.”

With over 50 million Americans claiming German ancestry, “German” in the U.S. reflects many dialects and histories. This talk explores a Kansas Mennonite community that traditionally used three languages—Plautdietsch, High German, and English—and what happens as English becomes dominant.
