The Norwich University Cemetery

The Norwich University Cemetery The Norwich University Cemetery page has been established to raise awareness of and build financial support for the ongoing needs of this special place.

Founded in 1988, the Norwich University Cemetery was made possible through a gift from the estate of Doris Conway, widow of John A. (Jack) Conway '28, a tank battalion commander in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Later in life, John would serve as Alumni Director at Norwich University. The Norwich University Cemetery stands on what is also known as Dole Hill. Over the years, Dole Hill has become

a special place for Norwich alums as well as cadets and has become a place that represents the Spirit of Old N.U. With its commanding views for the Dog River Valley and the many buildings making up the Norwich University campus, it has grown to be a special place in the hearts and minds of those with a deep abiding love for Norwich, her history and her mission. But, the Norwich University Cemetery receives no money from the university for ongoing maintenance and upkeep. Most alumni are completely unaware of this and that is the reason for this page. The Norwich University Cemetery needs your support.

Today, as we head into Memorial Day Weekend, please keep in mind that this holiday honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice - from the battles of Lexington and Concord through the Global War in Terror - in service to our Republic. It is not for veterans and active-duty service members still with us today.

Think about your way of life...the freedoms you take for granted...think about all of the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our Republic and ask yourself how you can show gratitude for such an amazing gift.

No words written have summed up the gravity of such a sacrifice better than those of President Abraham Lincoln...

Dear Madam,

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.
I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.

I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

A. Lincoln

Norwich Valor: An Exhibit by The Sullivan Museum and History Center at Norwich University

“A nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces but also by the men it honors, the men it remembers.” – John F. Kennedy

Service above self has been a cornerstone value of Norwich University since its founding. As we enter our third century as an institution that produces principled leaders, Norwich and the Sullivan Museum and History Center are excited to announce a permanent exhibit is being created to honor our Norwich alumni that have been recognized for their acts of valor in service to the nation.

The Sullivan Museum & History Center will announce that a permanent exhibit is being created called “Norwich Valor.” The ribbon cutting ceremony will launch this project to honor alumni for their acts of valor in service to the nation. The program will include details about how this interactive exhibit will use cutting edge technology to bring these amazing stories of service above self in an immersive and engaging way. All of our living valor recipients will be invited to attend the virtual ceremony.

Open to all; join us at Homecoming 2020, Oct. 2, 2:15-3 p.m. here:

To all the Norwich University alumni that have stood between us and our enemies - we honor you.
